The following is what I remember from the day, with some sideline snooping done by Caitlin. Enjoy! The day starts early, at 6 AM, when Chris Lewis ("Lewis") calls me at 6 AM to see if he should bike in to meet us or stay home if the tournament is cancelled. As it is not snowing yet, I tell him to come on out. I send an email at 6:30 after conferring with Will (who can only say the words "uhhhhh" and "yeahhhhhhh" at this point) and go to pick up the survivemobile, which I imagine handles like a dream in the snow. After packing everyone in and making the journey to scenic Warwick, RI at a snail's pace, we arrive to a veritable winter wonderland. Everyone has a good time playing with our toy for the tots, a Weebleville Playset that makes funny noise when you push on the cash register and causes the Elephant in the tutu to dance. We also munch on muffins made by Caitlin the night before, throw around in the snow, and wait for the captain's meeting, which is supposed to happen at 8:40 AM. Anyway, the TD eventually says at 9:30 or so that the captain's meeting will be in 15 minutes and promptly disappears. While waiting, Jeff Listfield (or "Jefe" for you womenfolk) attempts to hit the team with snowballs while they just stand there in a line. I frantically wait for something to happen and get more and more discontent. Eventually, Suck Wagon starts to scrimmage Stew (Kolthammer's team that Alice left us for), which we apparently win (which by the transitive property makes us Div I champs). Finally, at around 10:45 the TD reappears and we finally get our field assignments. Our first game is against the Skidmore Wombats. They come out in a zone and we trade a couple of points with them. Will gets his layout greatest, which was pretty impressive, which I chase down and sky some guy for. Unfortunately, I couldn't jump into the endzone with it, but we do eventually score the point. Will leaves the game with a bloody nose, but returns with it plugged up. Doug "Manimal" Duquette plays only in a jersey and shorts for this and most of the rest of the day. Though we finally start to get some zone offense going after hudling up and compromising between the different zone O systems used by Red Line and Quasar (as Caitlin and Jack Black says, "That's fucking teamwork"), we end up falling 9-5 at the cap. Our second game is against the Wheaton Lemony Fresh folks, who we end up beating by a ton thanks to some nice handling work by Charles, Will, and Lipson and good wing play by Nina and Mo. Other highlights of this game include me hucking it to LeeAnn (rather poorly, really) and her getting taken out completely by the girl guarding her, and everyone stopping because we thought she called a foul when really she had just yelled a profanity, and Lewis making some dude look really silly when he D'd him on the dump on the Wheaton goal line. I also end up wearing Ona's mustard colored Northern Kentucky sweatshirt. I also think that somewhere along this point a conversation about scrunchies occurred. Doug also proved he is likely the worst player of "the game" ever. Caitlin also wants me to mention when I "yelled from the sideline for lipson to huck it downfield and then [hung my] head and [said], 'he shouldn't have thrown that,' after lipson throws it away." Our last pool play game is against some team named Truck who doesn't show up right away. We huddle around and the Quasarites sing "Instant Pleasure," which is immediately followed by the Red Line veterans responding with "Stilettoes." Afterwards, we run an end zone drill that goes on for about 40 minutes. Soon enough a car drives by that seems to be looking for us and we start yelling "Truck" at it. It indeed appears to be them, as they waive back. Soon enough, they finally appear and we play a very truncated game. With us receiving and the game tied 4-4 we decide to add to and play to six. Around this time Caitlin overhears the Truck sideline wondering why the Harvard team is weraing a tail if MIT is the Boston school with a Beaver mascot. We put in our goal after I think Ona gets the disc back for us, and pull to them for our game point. After getting a D, Will puts it deep to Marissa against their zone O, and she goes up and makes a nice one handed grab to cement as us the second team in our pool. Finally, we capitalize on other teams leaving Marissa wide open in the zone all day long. The final game of the day puts us up against CLUE, who has some good veteran players and some young guys and girls. We trade points at the beginning, but end up falling behind a bit despite both Zach and Pi skying people left and right in the zone (including one time where Pi skied two girls and proceeded to take them both out while landing). The other team is also annoyed by Ona's sweatshirt and I end up wearing Caitlin's Quasar jersey. It is very tight on me. Will's mark apparently gets more aggressive, as Caitlin overhears the CLUE players say "Dude, he's molesting us." In the end, though, we just can't really get our zone O going again and end up falling 11-5. Afterwards, we drop Charles off in Providence at the train station after some adventures in Providence, RI, and head home for dinner as a team in Kirkland house. The conversation was stunning. Overall, a fun day of ultimate out in the snow and something to look back fondly on as we head indoors for the next few months. Always a pleasure playing with you all, Mike, aka "Raccoon Mario" PS -- Lucy, get well soon.
