Purpose
The Harvard Objectivist Club is an organization dedicated to the continuing
study of Objectivism, the philosophy developed by Ayn Rand. The fundamentals
of Objectivism are best summarized as follows:
-
Metaphysics: objective reality
-
Epistemology: reason
-
Ethics: rational self-interest
-
Politics: capitalism
This organization will seek to provide for Harvard students access to literature,
activities, and information concerning the philosophy of Objectivism.
It will serve as an information bureau and a center for educational activities,
such as guest speakers and videotapes.

Transfiguring the Novel: The Literary Revolution in Atlas Shrugged

Dr. Andrew Bernstein, Visitng Professor of Philosophy at Marist College
Tuesday, October 16th, 2007
Time: 7:30 pm
Location: Emerson Hall 305

DESCRIPTION: The novel, as the most conceptual of art forms, holds the potential to integrate a vast range of intellectual content. In Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand has actualized the full potential of the novel as a literary form.
This talk examines the specific means by which Ayn Rand synthesizes every conceivable literary element into a novel whose artistic integration is as complete as its grand-scale story (and philosophical scope) is vast.

Dr. Smith will explain why a person should be an egoist, the kind of egoism that Rand does and does not commend, and the kinds of virtues that a person must exercise in order to actually advance his self-interest. Along the way, Dr. Smith differentiates Rand's rational egoism from hedonism, materialism, and predation, and sketches Rand's egoistic account of two vital but widely misunderstood virtues: honesty and justice.
