On a New Frontier: Above and Beyond the Glass Ceiling
2007 National Symposium for the Advancement of Women in Science
Sponsored by Harvard's Women in Science at Harvard-Radcliffe
The National Symposium for the Advancement of Women in Science (NSAWS) has been a significant addition to WISHR's program. NSAWS serves to raise awareness of current issues facing female scientists and to encourage women to take leadership roles in scientific fields. The 2007 NSAWS will address
In Spring 2000, the first NSAWS addressed the developing role of women in science to an audience of several hundred undergraduate and graduate students, faculty members, and professionals. In 2003 and 2005, NSAWS included speakers such as former Director of the National Science Foundation Rita Colwell, Nobel Laureate Dudley Herschbach, radio personality Dr. Ruth Westheimer, and Barbara Grosz, Higgins Professor of Natural Science at Harvard University and Radcliffe Institute Dean of Science. Other renowned individuals who have spoken at our conferences include former President of the United States Board of Doctors without Borders Carol Etherington and renowned chemist Dr. Carolyn Bertozzi.
In addition to lectures, we biannually hold workshops led by the foremost women leaders in the fields of business, politics and government, as well as academia and medicine. Workshops in the past have focused on the interplay between work and family, graduate school, career planning, and science in relation to the humanities. In addition, panel discussion addressed topics such as interdisciplinary careers, leadership roles, and strategies to increase women's participation in science.
As NSAWS enters its fourth year, we hope to build upon the success of the previous conferences and look forward to the experience and perspective that this year’s diverse group of speakers and guests will bring to our exploration of our conference theme: “On a New Frontier: Above and Beyond the Glass Ceiling.”
