Living in your Adams House room

Parties

When students have parties in their suites, consideration of neighbors is expected. If more guests are invited than can easily fit into a suite, then permission should be sought to hold the party in the Lower Common Room or Dining Hall. Easily fit into is defined as no hall spillover of guests and no guests lined up in the halls to enter the party. The guidelines are:

Private party guidelines

  1. Private parties of 10 people or more must be cleared in advance with your entry tutor by obtaining his/her signature on a "Party Form." Party forms are available from Otto Coontz in the house office or online.
  2. Parties are expected to end by 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 p.m. on all other nights.
  3. Private parties should be contained within the room at all times. Excessive noise, overcrowding and/or repeated complaints from neighbors may result in the party being shut down.

Public party Guidelines

  1. A party held in a public room must end by 12:30 a.m. so that cleanup and replacement of the furniture can finish by 1 a.m.
  2. The room is reserved in the House Office. It is wise to think ahead, as large parties must be registered at the Dean of Students office in University Hall. That office has forms to be completed in addition to the Adams House form. Hosts must leave a room deposit and are responsible for accepting charges for any damage to the rooms or any excessive work required by the custodial staff to ready the room for future use.
  3. For parties, plays and functions that involve large numbers of people or an exchange of money, a police officer must be hired to monitor the C Entry door. Contact HUPD.

Providing, serving or being the source of alcohol for anyone under 21 is prohibited. The hosts of a gathering will be held responsible for violations of the law and college rules at that gathering.

Security info

Please do not leave your suite door propped open. An open door is an invitation to anyone telling them: "please come in and help yourself." You not only put yourself at risk of being robbed, but you also expose your roommates and the adjoining suites through the connecting Fire Doors. We have thefts in Adams House every year due to student carelessness.

There is a special risk associated with the Emergency Fire Doors that lead out to the stairwells. As long as the latch is intact, these doors can only be opened from the inside by you. But if the glass is broken, an intruder could enter directly from the stairs. This has happened in the past. Please, if you notice a broken Fire Door within your area, let Jorge know so that he can fix it. The first time we fix a door it is free. But if you make a habit of breaking the Fire Door glass and exposing everyone to an unnecessary risk, you will be charged for the replacement.

Room Violations

Please note that the College prohibits the use of cooking appliances in any room or apartment not equipped with kitchen facilities. The one exception to this policy is the Micro-Fridge, available for sale at https://www.collegerefrigerators.com/ or for rent at HSA.

In addition, College Fire Safety Instructions stipulate that "the use of candles is prohibited in House and dormitory rooms. Menorahs may be lit only in House common areas and only with the approval of the Master. They must always be attended."

To ensure the safety of everyone living in the dorms, inspectors will be conducting Fire/Safety Inspections of student rooms during the winter break. Inspections begin promptly at 10 AM. Inspectors will leave a note indicating any violation of College fire and safety policy found in your suite. Items that violate the policy include:

  • All cooking appliances (with the exception of Micro-Fridges), such as
    • Microwaves not part of a Micro-Fridge
    • Toasters
    • Coffee makers and hot pots
    • Grills
    • Popcorn makers
    • Rice cookers
  • All open sources of flame, such as
    • Candles (even for religious ceremonies)
    • BBQ grills
    • Fireplaces (now prohibited)
    • Incense
  • All combustibles, such as
    • Lighter fluid
    • Charcoal

Please note rooms will be reinspected in late January. Any items found that violate fire or safety policy will be confiscated and donated to charity, and your Senior Tutor will be notified of the ongoing violation.

In addition, blocked fire exits, disconnected smoke alarms, discharged fire extinguishers, and overloaded power strips or inadequate extension cords are violations of College fire and safety policy.

Also during the School year, if for any reason we have to enter your room and find a violation you will be notified to correct it. If is not done within 10 days the item will be confiscated.

Thank you for your help in maintaining the safety of our Houses.

Heating Your Room

Adams House is heated by circulating hot water. To prevent rooms from overheating each radiator has an automatic control valve that may be adjusted by the occupant. This valve is meant to give you control of the heat level in your room and to prevent the wasting of energy.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPERATING RADIATOR CONTROL VALVES:

  1. Locate the gray handle dial protruding from the valve. The valve is attached to the radiator and the handle is mounted on the radiator cover.
  2. Select the setting between 1 (lowest temperature) and 5 (highest temperature) on the dial at which you are most comfortable. Forcing the valve beyond the maximum setting will not produce more heat but may damage the valve.

TO ENSURE YOUR ROOM IS COMFORTABLE AND NOT WASTING ENERGY:

  1. Please check that all windows and storm windows are closed tightly. Windows should not be open during the heating season.
  2. Remove furniture, clothes, and books from around radiators to allow air to circulate.
  3. Please contact Jorge if your room is overheating and you feel it is wasting energy or if your room will not remain comfortably warm during daytime hours.
  4. Set the gauge on the snowflake symbol when you know your room will be unoccupied for 2 or more days.

HEATING PROBLEMS: Contact the Superintendent at 5-2258. If no one is in the supers office, contact the Control Center at 5-5560. The Control Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN REDUCING ENERGY COSTS AND HELPING TO REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS!

RECYCLING PROGRAM

Adams House's recycling program depends entirely upon your cooperation. Please do not put trash in recycling receptacles, and pay attention to the specifications throughout the house. Remember: have respects for those who process your recyclables. Your carelessness will create more work for them. In compliance with the College-wide recycling program, Adams House residents are able to recycle the following materials:

  • Newspaper, white paper, magazines and colored paper.
    • Brown paper bags are available in the Building Managers Office for containment of these materials. Please make use of them--you can use the bags for storing the paper in your suite. Whether you use these bags or supply your own, the paper must be contained in a bag or in a small blue bin, and plastic bags of paper are unacceptable. Full bags should be brought to paper recycling stations, which are located in the basements of A-entry, C-entry, E-entry, and H-entry. No paper plates, cups, napkins or tissues, please.
    • If you would like small Blue Bins in your room to store your Bottles and Paper till you remove them, check with the Superintendent, who should have some.
  • Corrugated Cardboard.
    • MUST be flattened in order to be recycled, due to the inconsistent sizes and shapes of boxes. Please place flattened corrugated cardboard in an intact box or paper bag, and deposit it at the paper recycling stations described above. No cereal or pizza boxes, as we cannot recycle paperboard, and pizza boxes are contaminated with food grease.
  • Containers
    • Clear glass, colored glass, metals (aluminum, steel and tin), and plastics #1 and #2 (check bottom of container for number) are acceptable, and should be brought to the recycling stations listed above.
  • Batteries
    • A blue battery receptacle is located next to the Superintendent's office.
