Harvard Badminton Club

James and Ikuko's Picture

One fine day, Ikuko Mukai-san showed up at the MAC wearing gleaming bright Yonex sweatpants and carrying a mean racquet. We took one look, and we were frightened. As it turned out, she had been taught how to dress, but not how to play. A few years of later, Ikuko Mukai-Cheh left these parts to seek greater glory (and a living wage) at Washington, D.C. By then, she had forgotten how to dress, but boy did she knew how to play! A certified badminton junkie and a former coach at the HBC, she remains active in the Northeast Badminton community. She is also a national level umpire with a voice that booms so loud that it is impossible to believe it really comes from her 5-foot frame.

James Cheh's first exposure to badminton at Harvard was a 15-0 drubbing. This directly lead to his avowed theory of how to treat newcomers - "humiliate them, then they will have respect for the game." No wonder the ultra soft-spoken James quickly acquired the nickname of "Silent Assassin". This reputation did not faze Ikuko however, who hunted him down with the precision of a tigress and well, you can see by the picture what happened.
