Constitution

Preamble 

Harvard Bhangra exists to meet the artistic and cultural needs of students who express interest in the Punjabi dance form of Bhangra.

Article I. Purpose

Harvard Bhangra:
I.1 exposes the Harvard community to the art form of Bhangra through campus performances
I.2 represents Harvard in competitive venues in the Boston area as well as nationally and internationally
I.3 teaches Bhangra to any and all individuals who are interested Article II. Structure and Duties
Section 1
The objectives outlined in Article I shall be carried out by the Bhangra Leadership and the membership at large.
Section 2
II.2.i The Bhangra Leadership shall consist of the Director(s), Team Captain(s), Costumes Manager, and Treasurer. Ad-hoc appointments may be created at the discretion of the Directors.
II.2.ii Descriptions of each office, and duties involved in fulfilling the office, are below.
DIRECTOR(S) The Director(s) shall work primarily to coordinate and administrate the efforts of the organization as a whole, and each of its component parts. The Director(s) will speak and represent the association in both off campus and on campus affairs. The Director(s) will also oversee the publicity and outreach efforts for the organization, in an effort to increase Harvard Bhangra’s presence on and off campus. The Directors will arrange for competitive and non-competitive performance venues for members of Harvard Bhangra, and will arrange for regular Bhangra classes for the greater Harvard community. The Director(s) must follow with the sentiments and concerns of the organization and welcome the efforts and ideas of any and all. There may be up to two Directors.
TEAM CAPTAIN(S) The Team Captain(s) are responsible for managing the competitive team(s). The Team Captain(s) shall recruit and audition team members, compose and choreograph the competitive piece(s), arrange for regular team practices, and coach the individuals of the team and the team as a whole. There may be up to five Team Captain(s).
COSTUMES MANAGER The Costumes Manager is responsible for keeping track of all costumes and costume components. The Costumes Manager will ensure that each costume is complete and arrange for regular cleaning and upkeeping of the costumes. The Costumes Manager will also act as the primary liaison for costume rental. There will be one Costumes Manager.
TREASURER The Treasurer is in charge of all monetary transactions involving the organization. The Treasurer is responsible for a financial summary at the end of each year. In addition, the Treasurer will be responsible for securing funding and/or applying for grants for all of the organization’s needs and activities. The Treasurer and Director(s) will solely retain signing power for Harvard Bhangra financial accounts. There will be one Treasurer.

Article IV. Membership

All affiliates of Harvard University are eligible for membership in Harvard Bhangra. Membership shall be defined by subscription to the official Harvard Bhangra email list by such affiliates.

Article V. Transition of Power
Section 1
V.1.i All members of Harvard Bhangra that have a full year of studies remaining are eligible for a position in the Bhangra Leadership.
V.1.ii An individual may hold more than one office.

Section 2
V.2.i The Bhangra Leadership shall solicit applications for the offices from the entire membership. For positions in which more than one person may serve, co-candidates are expected to apply as teams.
V.2.ii The Bhangra Leadership shall select the next year’s officers by majority vote, taking into consideration the recommendations of the corresponding outgoing officers.
V.2.iii Officers must be chosen by May in the academic year prior to which they will serve.

Article VII. Removal

Section 1
Failure to abide by the principles and by-laws of the Constitution and/or negligence of the duties required of any officer shall be cause for removal.

Section 2
VI.2.i Notice of such failure may be brought to the attention of the Bhangra Leadership by written petition by any member of Harvard Bhangra, which will be read and presented at the Bhangra Leadership meeting following receipt of the complaint.
VI.2.ii An officer may be removed with the unanimous consent of the rest of the Bhangra Leadership.

Article VIII. Amendments

Any amendment to the constitution must be approved by a majority of the Bhangra Leadership. The membership shall be notified of the changes. Any objection brought by the membership must be considered and voted upon by the Bhangra Leadership.
