HARVARD RED LINE 2008

Red Line 2008
College Championships 2008: Boulder, CO

2008 Season Recap:
The 2008 season was full of ups and downs for the Harvard Red Line, but everything fell into place at the right time as Harvard made its best appearance to date at the UPA College Championships, finishing in a four-way tie for 5th. The spring season began in Las Vegas, NV where the team made a run to the semi-finals of the largest college tournament. After surpasing nationals caliber teams in North Texas and Illinois, Harvard beat one of the Vegas surprise teams, Whitman, in the quarterfinals before falling to Arizona, the ciderella story of the desert, in the semi-finals. Centex, Role Call, and Yale Cup saw highs and lows as the team struggled to find its place after early season success. Harvard, however, got it together for the series, reclaiming the Metro Boston sectional title for the first time since 2005, beating Tufts in the finals. Seeded first going into Regionals, Harvard soon found its Somerville rival, Tufts, across the pitch in the semi-finals. A loss forced Harvard into the backdoor bracket for Sunday where they beat Williams and Umass, meeting Tufts in the second-place game. The winner would earn the New England Region's second bid to The College Championships in Boulder, CO; Dartmouth had already locked up the first bid by beating Tufts in the finals. In an exciting match where the Harvard offense was never broken, the Red Line earned their trip to Boulder.

At the Championships, Red Line, seeded 16th of 16, was placed in Pool D with Michigan(4), Texas(5), and Georgia(9). Despite close losses to Michigan (15-12) and Georgia (16-14), a win against Texas (17-16) was enough to send Harvard to the pre-quarters. A come-from-behind 17-15 victory against North Texas (12) sent Harvard to the quarterfinals where they faced the eventual Champions, Wisconsin. The road ends there, but the Red Line thanks all their fans and alumni for the support throughout the season.

A little about our teams:
Harvard has both an A team (Red Line) and a B team (Bred Line). Our A team is a perennial contender out of the New England Region. The A team is coached by Josh McCarthy and Jeff Graham, who are currently on the elite club team Boston Ultimate. While we play year-round, the college season is not until the spring. During the Fall we travel to some tournaments around the region, focusing on developing younger players, building a base for the spring season, and having fun. When the cold winter months hit, we have an 8-team indoor league, yielding much trash talk. Once January rolls around, we split into our A team and our B team and train for the Spring, which includes tournaments around the country, Spring Break in the South, and then a local tournament to tune up before Sectionals, Regionals, and Nationals.

Last Year:
The 2006-2007 season saw Harvard Men's Ultimate claim its first Yale Cup victory in early April by battling past Brown and Dartmouth en route to the championship. But, after earning bids to College Nationals in 2005 and 2006, the Red Line came up short at Regionals in 2007, finishing 5th.
