Much of the EAC’s focus work is done by our largely-autonomous project groups. Project groups are chaired by one or two chairs who also sit on the EAC’s board, and it is at this level that members most actively participate in advocacy, action, and research. New members are welcome and encouraged to form new project groups on an issue that particularly interests them—the project group structure is designed so that you’ll have the EAC’s institutional support behind you while you spearhead your own passion. Talk to the Chair, Karen McKinnon, if you’re interested in starting your own project group.
As of Spring 2009, we have three standing committees: Sustainable Allston, Earth Day, and Environmental Education.
Environmental Education is an after-school program working with middle school children (grades 6-8) in Boston Public Schools. EnviroEd’s mission is to educate children about the environment and foster an appreciation for the natural world in which we live. The EnviroEd program gives undergraduate volunteers the opportunity to work with the same group of students throughout 2, 10-week semesters, leading up to a final presentation to the school community. The program is based on an exciting and established curriculum which allows volunteer teachers to establish a close relationship with students and watch them grow.

Sustainable Allston (SA) is a student group that advocates for the sustainable development of the new Harvard campus in Allston. By expanding into Allston, Harvard plans to almost double the size of the campus. SA’s goal is to advocate sustainable building practices for this large project. The decisions made today will be felt for many decades to come.
SA has already achieved many successes. In response to SA’s encouragement, Harvard has published a list of the college’s Sustainability Principles encompassing not only Allston development, but the existing parts of campus as well. In 2005, SA held a series of speakers dealing with different issues in sustainable development. In 2006, SA hosted a conference on campus sustainability.
