Quote of the week...

"I think things are changing in Washington... Matter of fact, the U.S. Senate approved a resolution the other day, 100-to-nothing, saying that we have a problem with Social Security and we need to come up with a permanent solution. That is progress. It's a solemn commitment from the Senate."

- President Bush, discussing Social Security reform in Orlando, Florida on Friday

This is the first time in recent memory HRC has run an extended local campaign based on national politics. Signs will appear in other freshman dorms within the week. I. Board Meeting Postponed Until After Vacation - Our next board meeting will be Wednesday, April 6th at 10 PM in the Winthrop Tonkens Room, not this Wednesday. Good luck with midterms and have a fun and safe vacation! For your calendars, additional board meetings are tentatively scheduled for April 20th and May 4th (contrary to past announcements).

II. Governor Romney's Birthday - Thursday! - It's that time of year again! Governor Romney's birthday party will be held this Thursday at the Copley Plaza Hotel downtown, and you're invited! HRC members can get in for free ($100 value), so long as you RSVP to Matthew (mdowner@fas) ASAP stating that you will show up between 4:30 and 5 in business attire prepared to do a modest amount of help with setup. The reception and celebration begin around 5:30, and of course you can stay for that. The party has been fantastic in years past, so do come! You can view the invitation at http://www.harvardgop.org/Documents/GovBirthday.pdf.

III. MACR Convention - RSVP Now! - The annual convention of the Massachusetts Alliance of College Republicans will be held Saturday April 9th to Sunday April 10th at the Hyatt Harborside Hotel. Come help HRC elect a new slate of MACR leaders and represent our club. We're going to have a boat cruise Saturday night, and invited speakers include WH Chief of Staff Andrew Card, Governor Mitt Romney, Grover Norquist and others. HRC is subsidizing this event to reduce the cost to $35/person, which includes the cruise and a hotel room. RSVP right away to Meghan (mgrizzle@fas).

IV. Freshmen: Support Social Security Reform! - HRC has just started the portion of our Social Security campaign dedicated to getting posters supporting Social Security reform in freshman windows in the Yard. Posters were delivered to freshman house reps earlier this week, who will now distribute them to individual freshmen. If you want to put a poster in your window, contact your house rep or email Stephen Dewey (sdewey@fas).

V. Ralph Reed at the Forum - Wednesday! - Ralph Reed, Southeast Chairman for Bush/Cheney '04 and founder and president of Century Strategies will deliver a speech at the IOP Forum this Wednesday at 6 entitled "Vision, Values & American Politics." Mr. Reed is largely responsible for the recent rise of the Georgia Republican Party and was executive director of the Christian Coalition for 8 years. HRC is a cosponsor of this event.

VI. HPU Thursday - "Neglected Nations" - HPU's topic of the week is "Neglected Nations" - why do some nations appear to receive more support from the US than other nations? Come debate your fellow students at 6:00 on Thursday in the IOP First Floor Conference Room. Contact Vivek (ramasw@fas) with questions.

VII. Become a House Rep - We are still looking for volunteers in a few houses to be House Reps. You will be responsible for finding Republicans in your House and getting them to come to social events and General Meetings. You will get a budget to throw mini-events every semester. We still need House Reps in Dunster, Leverett, Lowell and Pfoho. Let John (souther@fas) know if you are interested.

VIII. Pioneer Essay Contest Deadline Extended! - The deadline for the Pioneer Institute's essay contest has been extended to March 28th in order to allow for more submissions, which implies that your odds are fairly good if you enter! The essay topic is "What is the proper function of Massachusetts state government? What should it do? What should it not do?" The first place prize is $1,000. More details available at www.pioneerinstitute.org/college

IX. Get Your New HRC T-Shirt! - T-shirts are $10 and can be purchased from John Souther; email him at souther@fas.harvard.edu. To see the design for yourself, go to: http://hcs.harvard.edu/~gop/hrc_merchandise.html
