Quote of the week...

"In the last five months, we have witnessed successful elections in Afghanistan, the Palestinian Territory and Iraq; peaceful demonstrations on the streets of Beirut; and steps toward democratic reform in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The trend is clear: In the Middle East and throughout the world, freedom is on the march."

- President Bush, in his weekly radio address on March 5th.

TOP PHOTO: Lebanese opposition supporters protest while waving Lebanese flags as they shout anti-Syrian slogans during a demonstration against Syria and the Lebanese government at the Martyrs square in downtown Beirut, Lebanon, Sunday Feb. 27, 2005. Shortly afterward, the Lebanese Army Command issued a statement calling on citizens not to demonstrate or gather in all Beirut areas. Several thousand anti-Syrian protesters took to Beirut's streets late Sunday in defiance of that ban, as a U.S. official kept up Washington's pressure on Syria by calling on it to withdraw its 15,000 troops from Lebanon and stop interfering in this country's affairs. Since then, Syria has agreed to such a withdrawal. (AP Photo/Hussein Malla)

BOTTOM PHOTO: Lebanese opposition protesters set up an anti-Syrian poster one day after the Lebanese government's resignation in Beirut, Lebanon, Tuesday March 1, 2005. Israel is watching the groundswell of protest against Syria's control of Lebanon with anticipation, with one top official expressing hope a sovereign Lebanon would sign a peace deal with the Jewish state. But others warn a Syrian exit could destabilize Israel's northern neighbor and heat up a proxy war Damascus has been waging against Israel through Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas. I. New, Improved General Meeting Wednesday - The next HRC general meeting is this Wednesday at 10:00 in the Winthrop Tonkens Room, and we're reworking it to be more social and fun. Drinks will be served, we're going to have a group activity and we're going to try to open up the meeting so that everybody can participate. If you have any ideas, please send them to Matt (mdowner@fas).

Upcoming board meetings: March 23, April 6, April 20.

II. Congressman Jim Kolbe - Today! - Don't miss your chance to eat lunch with Republican Congressman Jim Kolbe. Kolbe is the only openly gay Republican member of Congress, and is bound to be interesting. The lunch is today at 1PM in the Alison Dining Room at the KSG, Taubman 5th Floor. To RSVP, email Matt Downer immediately (mdowner@fas).

III. Campus Social Security Campaign Begins Now! - HRC's campus campaign for Social Security reform starts this week, and you'll want to get in on the action! We'll be handing out flyers, postering and putting up signs. If you want to help, email Stephen (sdewey@fas). We're particularly interested in getting freshmen in the Yard to cover their windows with signs. Also email Stephen if you have any other campaign ideas.

IV. St. Patrick's Day Party - Saturday! - Come party with the HRC and members of other College Republican clubs from around the city this Saturday in the Lowell Belltower! The party will be from 10 PM to 2 AM. The belltower is up a long flight of steps immediately on your right as you enter Lowell.

V. Become a House Rep - We are still looking for volunteers in a few houses to be House Reps. You will be responsible for finding Republicans in your House and getting them to come to social events and General Meetings. You will get a budget to throw mini-events every semester. We still need House Reps in Dunster, Kirkland, Leverett, Lowell and Pfoho. Let John (souther@fas) know if you are interested.

VI. HPU Thursday - Gun Control - HPU's topic of the week is Gun Control. Come debate your fellow students at 6:00 on Thursday in the IOP First Floor Conference Room. Contact Vivek (ramasw@fas) with questions.

VII. Debate With the Dems - Wed. 3/16 - HRC has confirmed that our first debate with the Dems, on Social Security, will be held on Wednesday the 16th. Final time and location TBA in next week's bulletin.

VIII. Take Back The Night! HRC has signed on as a co-sponsor of the Take Back The Night campaign against rape. We will forward you more information about this worthy program as it becomes available.
