Quote of the week...

"Elections are rarely about accepting the lesser of two evils. While negative campaign advertisements attract a lot of attention, most candidates for public office have deep resumes, thoughtful stances and good ideas. This year's statewide election is no different. Electing Jerry Kilgore governor... will keep Virginia moving forward."

- Danville Register & Bee

I. SUPPORT OUR TROOPS WEEK! - HRC is co-sponsoring a "Support Our Troops" week this week with the Harvard College Democrats, and we want you to join us! Please come to the following exciting events, and contact Andrea Nosal (amnosal@fas) with any questions, and also if you want to table for us in your dining hall.
  • RALLY (Wednesday) - Rally to support our troops this Wednesday at noon in front of the Science Center! The rally will include speakers from HRC and the Harvard Dems.
  • MARCH (Friday) - March for our veterans this Friday, Veterans' Day! Meet at noon at John Harvard's statue. There are no classes on Friday!
  • DONATE (Wednesday/Thursday) - Donate to the joint HRC-Dems sponsorship of a platoon of U.S. troops in Iraq. We're going to send them care packages with items that are hard to obtain during deployment (like DVDs and magazines), and personally communicate with them as well. Monetary donations can be made at our tables in every dining hall during dinner and in front of the Science Center this Wednesday and Thursday.
  • REMEMBER (Sunday) - Attend the memorial service at 11 AM this Sunday 11/13 in Memorial Church, in honor of Harvard students who have fallen in service to our country.

II. HRC General Meeting Wednesday - HRC's next general meeting is this Wednesday, November 9th at 10 PM in the Winthrop Tonkens Room. As usual, a group will be leaving from John Harvard's statue at 9:45 for those interested. At this meeting there will be an overview of the upcoming HRC elections, among other things (see below).

III. Debate the "Living Wage" at HPU - Thursday - HPU's topic of the week is the Student Labor Action Movement's (SLAM) campus campaign for a $20/hour "living wage" for Harvard-employed janitors. We'd encourage all of you to attend and make your opinions heard. The discussion is at 6 on Thursday in the IOP, and pizza will be served.

IV. Dinner with Wellesley College Republicans - Friday! - Celebrate Veterans' Day with the Wellesley College Republicans this Friday at 8 PM at Phatt Boys on Church Street. This restaurant has jazz starting at 9 and you can expect to spend about $15-20 total. To RSVP, email Jennifer Carne (jcarne@wellesley.edu).

V. FYI: HRC Elections in about a month, candidacy declarations due soon - HRC's yearly elections occur towards the end of the second semester, typically at the beginning of December. Right now, the tentative date for HRC elections is Wednesday, December 7th. This week, HRC President Matthew Downer will appoint a 5-person election committee, which will be approved by the executive board and then announced. This committee will enact and enforce the rules of the election. For the basic framework of HRC elections, consult Article VIII of our constitution: www.harvardgop.org/constitution.html  . NOTE: Based on this timeframe, candidates will need to declare by roughly a week and a half from now. Information on how to do this will be sent over gop-announce very soon and described in detail at Wednesday's general meeting.

VI. Join the "Confirm Alito" Facebook Group! - Join the "Confirm Alito" facebook group to show your support for President Bush's new nominee to the Supreme Court! You can search for "Confirm Alito" or visit http://www.facebook.com/group_profile.php?gid=19178 once you're logged in. If you want to become an admin to invite your friends, email John Wilson (jwilson@fas).

VII. Gaylord Study Group - Wednesdays - Joe Gaylord, the author of the Contract with America and the 1994 campaign manager of the year, will be leading a study group at the IOP every Wednesday at 4:00pm. He will be discussing how to win campaigns in the 21st century from both a candidate and a strategist perspective. We encourage you all to participate.

VIII. Buy a T-Shirt - You can buy an HRC T-shirt for $10 by emailing John Souther at souther@fas.harvard.edu to arrange for payment and shipping/pickup.

IX. Pay Dues - If you haven't paid your $5 dues for the year yet, you can do so by mailing it with your name and email address to Meghan Grizzle, 195 Leverett Mail Center, Cambridge, MA 02138. Paying dues gets you a membership card, priority in our events and other benefits.
