I. ELECTION NIGHT = This Tuesday!
After a year as President of the Harvard Republican Club-- I just wanted to put into words the emotion and pride I have in leaving my position and to share with you the rewards and lessons of leading what I believe to be the best and most incredible organization on campus.
You make the club and I want to take this opportunity to reflect and thank you for your participation, energy, and hard work in allowing the HRC to grow and change in the past year. It has not been easy and despite the tribulations and challenges we faced, you have made this organization what it is today and I think I represent the entire board when I say that we are proud and happy to leave this club to you and the members of the 119th Board of the Harvard Republican Club which we will elect this Tuesday.
I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude, especially to the individuals who have worked to make this organization a success this past year. First, I want to thank the mentors of this organization who have personally guided me and my work in the past years. Although we have has many differences, they were the first ones to inspire me to join this club and their tenacity remains very much part of this organization. To Meghan Grizzle '07, Daren Stanaway '07 and Stephen Dewey '07-'08– your torch will be passed on.
For my colleagues: I owe my thanks first to Carolyn Puente and to Alee Lockman, Zachary Smith, and Christopher Higgins, who have revitalized the social life in our organization. Their creativity and dedication has allowed us to realize the full potential of our new board restructuring which began in 2006. Michelle Parilo and Mark Shepard's success can be seen through our healthy finances and the updated website. I would also like to show appreciation for Caleb Weatherl, who has added a unique vision to the club and has planned many memorable events this year.
Finally, I must thank Colin Motley, the second-in-command this year for his hard and never-wavering commitment in jump starting our 2008 elections effort and for being a constant force of optimism on and off the Board this year. This year would not have been possible without your energy and the combined efforts of the entire board and the membership. Thank you.
This is a party of ideas, change, and action.
I hope the new board we are about to elect will continue to outreach with minority groups, the Women's Center and other students that have not been a part of the HRC. Our message is clear and it is being heard. The campus is more receptive to Harvard Republicans than ever before.
If there is anything I learned this year, it is this: We need to work hard to ensure that the club and the Party becomes more inclusive and more open. The Republican Club needs to work hard to attract and keep mainstream conservatives and to advertise our ideas in a way that is appealing to our peers and to this campus. We are working to win elections nationwide but we need to remember that Harvard is home base.
Finally, I want to invite the club to join me as I initiate a new ROTC campaign for 2008 to reignite the long delayed dialogue on the University's non-recognition of this vital program. We owe it to these courageous women and men -- our peers, to work towards the full recognition of their work at Harvard. Thanks very much to the members for allowing me the privilege and honor of serving you and the Republicans at Harvard and I wanted to end by sharing this quote from Ronald Reagan, "We cannot become a narrow sectarian party in which all must swear allegiance to prescribed commandments. Such a party can be highly disciplined, but it does not win elections. This kind of party soon disappears in a blaze of glorious defeat." Let's work hard to build our party towards victory 2008! With greatest respect and gratitude, Jeff --- III. Boston University College Republicans to Hold Event Featuring the Leader of the Anti-Feminist Movement Phyllis Schlafly "Feminist Follies" will take place on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at 7:30pm in the BU College of Arts and Sciences room 522 (on the 5 th floor). The College of Arts and Sciences is located at 745 Commonwealth Avenue . There will be an opportunity to ask questions of the speaker in an open question period at the end of the lecture. This event is free and open to the public. Phyllis Schlafly has been the leader against the Feminist movement, since the publication of her best-selling 1964 book, A Choice Not An Echo . In a ten-year battle, Mrs. Schlafly led the pro-family movement to victory over the principal legislative goal of the radical feminists, called the Equal Rights Amendment. An articulate and successful opponent of the radical feminist movement, she appears in debate on college campuses more frequently than any other conservative.
