Volunteer with Family Van this Summer

The Family Van is a Harvard Medical School (HMS) affiliated Mobile Health Clinic providing preventative services in seven locations across Boston. The dual purpose is to provide preventive care to those with limited resources and to train future health care providers in offering services to a culturally diverse population.

Training opportunities:

A. Weekly opportunities: On alternate weeks volunteers contribute to the running of the organization by carrying out their shift at the office.

  1. Direct Service on the Van and Program Support – Provide screening and health coaching to our clients
  2. Community based evaluation and research – Evaluate our service to demonstrate the value of mobile health care and identify opportunities for organizational change
  3. Outreach & Education – Establish community partnerships, perform outreach in the community, identify the needs of the community, and advocate for the Family Van

B. For credit opportunities (time commitment flexible):
Internships: Help build our service by carrying out a special project!
Public Health and scholarly projects: Epidemiological and qualitative projects available. Perfect for Harvard Medical School scholarly projects, Harvard School of Public Health Practica, and other Schools’ for-credit school projects.

What past students have said:
“The Family Van is a powerful symbol of successful health care interactions. It has taught me the importance of establishing patient trust. I have realized that health care settings are intimidating and steps should be taken to contextualize invasive questions, among other things”.
“I have learned how valuable establishing a partnership with patients can be to both the health care provider and client in promoting health.” — Rosh Kumar Viasha Sethi, Harvard Medical Student
