Staff Writer Application
Thank you for your interest in joining the staff of the Harvard College Global Health Review(HCGHR)! The HCGHR is one of the fastest growing publications at Harvard University, and remains the only fully undergraduate-run global health publication in the nation. We currently distribute to all schools and major libraries at Harvard and are beginning expansion nationally. In this exciting time for global health, the HCGHR will serve a critical role in engaging dialogue, giving voice to the work and ideas of students across campus, and fostering a community of individuals dedicated towards improving the lives of those less fortunate.
The HCGHR Staff Writers serve the most vital role in the organization by preparing the articles that report on current global health issues and related expert opinions. Writers are each assigned an article topic and trained in the skills of professional journalism. They are given the individual responsibility to complete a well-researched and high-quality article, guided by a Section Editor and an experienced Graduate Student Adviser. They conduct extensive research, build professional connections through interviews with global health experts, and ultimately have their article and byline featured in the printed edition of the HCGHR. Writers also have the opportunity to write pieces for the HCGHR website(http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/hghr) and participate in an exciting new program that aims to provide a casual forum for discussion and networking in global health here at Harvard: the Global Health Exchange, or GH|X.
Please see below for the required duties of a Staff Writer. The responsibilities below are
important not only for the successful production of a quality publication, but also for forging a close, collaborative community of passionate individuals—an organizational ideal that we all work very hard towards within the HCGHR.
The duties of the HCGHR Staff Writers are as follows:
• To remain on staff for one full academic year;
• To attend all scheduled staff meetings, unless absence is justified and excused by the
Editorial Board;
• To produce, at least, one article each semester that is approved by the Editorial Board for
publication in a printed issue of the HCGHR;
• To meet with their assigned Section Editor or Graduate Adviser, alternating among them,
at least once every week;
• To produce articles and posts for the website or complete other journalistic tasks for the
HCGHR, per reasonable assignment by the Editorial Board;
• To attend the issue Launch Event, the Adviser-Staff Dinner, and other mandatory events.
