Friday Congregational Prayer –

Friday prayer (jumu‘ah) is held weekly on campus in Lowell Lecture Hall, located near the Science Center.  The first call to prayer (adhan) is given at 1:15 and prayer ends by 2:00. Be sure to schedule classes, sections and/or other activities accordingly!

Gaining Access to the Musalla (Prayer Space)

In light of the Harvard College security upgrade to the SmartCard system, please see the process for Harvard affiliates to obtain access to the Harvard Canaday E Muslim Prayer Space (Musallah).  Those with a swipecard can no longer gain access to college-specific buildings, including the Muslim prayer space in Canaday.  All university affliliates must switch to the new SmartCard ID Card for access to the Muslim Prayer Space in Canaday. For more information regarding the new ID card system and dates and locations where you can exchange your ID for the new ID cards, please visit: http://www.newid.huid.harvard.edu/

For those with the new ID cards (with two magnetic strips on the back) and need access to the Canaday Muslim Prayer space, please do the following steps:

1. Email mahmed@college.harvard.edu your Full Name, 9 digit Harvard University ID (HUID) and Harvard affiliation.

2. A week after sending the above information, you must have it activated by the Harvard Yard Operations. Please visit their office in Weld Hall, Harvard Yard:

Weld Hall, room B1,

Phone: (617) 495-1874

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

As with all new processes, complications may arise as both HIS and the University continue to work on providing access in a more expedited manner. We truly appreciate your patience through all of this and do feel free to reach Muneeb Ahmed (mahmed@college.harvard.edu) if you have any questions or concerns.

Qibla

A convenient way to figure out the direction of the Qibla from your dorm/apartment is to go to http://www.qiblalocator.com. Enter your address (or “Harvard Square, 02138” to get to the general area), then zoom in with the satellite view and drag the map to get your building in the center. The red line gives you the direction you need to face!

If you want to go all technical: Boston is centered at 42°22’11″ N latitude, and 71°01’47″ W longitude. The Great Circle direction of the Qibla from Boston & Cambridge is 60°28′ from North.
