Weekly Programs

Burdah
To help us, as a community, increase in love of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and increase in understanding of his teachings, the Harvard Islamic Society welcomes you to the one of this semester’s “Burdah Nights”, a weekly less-than-one-hour long event. The poem is in Arabic, but please come regardless of your Arabic skills. Come listen to a poem that is sung weekly from Zanzibar to Harvard Yard, from Java to Jammu. An excellent short documentary on this famous poem is available here.

Halaqa
The Halaqa program is a traditional discussion circle, held weekly with separate accommodations for brothers and sisters. The program is designed to teach the “essentials” of the religion, centered around “iman” (issues of belief), “islam” (issues regarding rules), and “ihsan” (spiritual excellence). The theme for this year’s Halaqa has been the life and teachings of the Prophet (SAW). Halaqat occur on Friday evenings.

Fireside Chats
The HIS Fireside Chat program was started this year as an initiative to encourage community discussions of other topics beyond the formal Halaqa program. These include sometimes sensitive areas including the identity of Muslims in America, politics, interactions between the sexes and more. Fireside chats typically occur on Saturday evenings.

Tajweed Class
This class will offer you the opportunity and honor of becoming part of one of the shortest and most authentic chains of transmission linking you to the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. While some students commence as complete beginners, other will enter with some background. However, all students will be encouraged to pursue the ijaza or advanced authorization in tajwid.  Using the traditional teacher-student model, this class in Tajwid will allow you to measure your progress step by step and bring structure to developing your relationship with the Quran. Learning Tajwid provides you with the opportunity to draw near to the Divine through the articulation of His Word. If you have any questions please feel free to contact: Yaser Ali at yaser715@gmail.com or Na’eel Cajee at ncajee@gmail.com

Dinner Table
Thursday’s Dinner table is a halal meal served in Adams small dining hall for all of Harvard undergrads and grad students.  The room is always packed, full of laughter, and has a great family-like atmosphere that provides a much needed break from school.
Monday’s Dinner Table at  Winthrop is also a halal meal provided by Harvard, but it is only open to undergraduates.  These dinners are cozier than Thursday’s dinners and allow you to get to know your fellow HISers very well as you laugh over the extremely large portions of chicken served or discuss the deliciousness of the rice.
