Where We Work

The communities that we are working in are located in Nicaragua in Central America. There are many reasons for working in Nicaragua. First of all, by most standards, Nicaragua is recognized as the second poorest nation in this hemisphere behind only Haiti. One can understand the severity of the situation by looking at some statistics of the country. According to Witness for Peace, an organization that has done a great deal of work over more than 20 years in Nicaragua, at least 80% of the population lives in poverty. The national average for education is 3.5 years. Almost half of the population lives on less than one dollar a day. The per capita income is $810. This means that more than 40% of the population is underemployed or unemployed. Additionally, one in three Nicaragua children is malnourished [1].

We also have established local contacts in Nicaragua and have begun forging important and strong relationships with the members of several communities there. Our work is based out of the village of El Limón, near the city of Estelí in the North of the country. Though we are based out of El Limón we are working with several other communities in the nearby area.
