The last week of the program (8/22-8/29) will be absolutely exciting. Your internship will have ended by then, and with all that free time on your hands, you'll get the chance to finally explore Shanghai as well as understand China. The activities sponsored for that week include:

  • Discussions with the government officials who made this program possible.
  • Night-time cruise around the beautiful Shanghai Bund, one of the most famous places in all of Shanghai, to see the bright lights of both old and modern Shanghai,
  • Dinner with Chinese-Americans who've gone BACK to Shanghai after working in other countries, to gain a sense of why they chose to work in Shanghai.
  • A day-long trip to Suzhou, a gorgeous ancient city located just outside of Shanghai, commonly described as one of the most beautiful places in China.
  • Meeting Chinese college-students to understand their lives.

And much more to be described in fuller detail!

1. Are the students working for the Chinese government?
No. This point cannot be made more clearly. The firms that the students will eventually work for are all private companies who have no direct relationship to the government. The partnership with the government helps us make these internships into a reality.

2. What is the government's role in this project?
Their role is twofold. On one hand, they are a liaison between SIP and the companies. On the other hand, they are very interested in having students understand Shanghai better and really appreciate the city. They hope that through this program, participants will get a better sense of Shanghai's character, understanding the culture, the people, and all the various elements that make it the international hub that it has become.

3. What will the internship consist of?
Each internship will be different depending on the company and the industry. For example, in a biomedical company, you'll most likely be doing research, whereas finance companies wouldn't be interested in that. For each company though, how much you get out of the internship is really up to how you pursue this opportunity. One general rule of thumb, being proactive will help you get more out of the internship.

4. Who can we contact while in Shanghai if we run into problems?
There will be a very reliable contact person in Shanghai for all participants. More information will be provided in the delegate packet that each confirmed participant will receive.

5. How will cell phones work in China?
If you own a cell phone where you can take the SIM card out, you can buy a new SIM card in China and use it there. More details on specifics of living in Shanghai will be provided for each confirmed participants.
