Our Fiftieth Anniversary

Our fiftieth is coming!

July 2006

Dear Harvard-Radcliffe Gilbert & Sullivan Players Alumni,

Let the air with joy be laden this December as we invite you to come to fair Harvard for a weekend of Gilbert & Sullivan! Fifty years ago, Harvard and Radcliffe students found themselves singing the timeless songs of Gilbert and Sullivan on the Agassiz stage for the first time. Following performances around Cambridge, several students took it upon themselves to institutionalize the practice and gained a charter from Harvard College to "present Gilbert and Sullivan to the Harvard Community." With Ruddigore, or The Witch's Curse, in Spring 1956, the grand tradition of HRG&SP began. Like Rose Maybud, students fell madly, passionately in love with the idea, and here we are today, commemorating our Golden Anniversary!

This winter, from December 7th to 10th, we will be celebrating with joy and rapture! Join in the festivities as members past and present come together for a weekend of performances, workshops, feasting, shared memories, and general merriment. Enjoy our production of H.M.S. Pinafore, and then play and sing as in days of long ago in our alumni talent show, sing along, and orchestra play along. Dance a cachuca at our Victorian Ball and pour oh pour the pirate sherry and pass the time with your fellow alumni and the current cast, staff, and board at receptions in your honor. It will be a weekend of reunions and regaling in the Agassiz Theatre, our home since 1956.

On this portion of the website you will find a calendar of events (see here for a description of the events), a letter from our treasurer regarding our fundraising efforts, and, most importantly, a form to return to us indicating which events you plan to attend. We have included suggested packages and prices for the weekend, but if you are in need of financial assistance, please feel free to contact us. We encourage you to bring your families along, too, as the majority of our events will be fun for all ages. While we will provide plenty of activities to keep you busy, we hope that alums will also create their own amusement as they find fellow classmates, meet new friends, and rediscover Cambridge.

We welcome donations for our exhibition of stories and memorabilia, from posters and programs to recordings and small props. We also need volunteers to help organize events and contact classmates. Please contact us at hrgsp-50th@theatre.harvard.edu or PO Box 382143 Cambridge, MA 02238. Thank you.

We hope to see you in December!
