Our Fiftieth Anniversary: Description of Events

Our fiftieth is coming!

The show that cemented Gilbert and Sullivan's collaborative relationship will be the centerpiece of our 50th Anniversary Celebration.


Opening Reception

Mingle with alumni and current students while enjoying light refreshments and a champagne toast at our welcome event. We will hear brief greetings from Dean Benedict Gross '71, and one of our founding fathers, Wayne Paton '56.


Exhibition Grand Opening

Acting Workshop

Orchestra Play Along

Bring your instrument and join music director Ben Green '06 for a read through of all the G&S overtures. This is a rare and unique opportunity that should not be missed. Spectators are also welcome.


Film Screenings: Eric Idle's Mikado or Topsy Turvy

If you can't get enough G&S at the live performances, join us during the day for G&S on film. The audience will select either Topsy Turvy or Eric Idle's Mikado.


The Letter Killeth But The Spirit Giveth Life
A Discussion on the Authenticity versus Tradition in the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera
Friday at 3:00 pm

Fredric Woodbridge Wilson, the curator of the Harvard Theatre Collection and former curator of the Gilbert and Sullivan Collection at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York will discuss the conflict between authenticity and tradition in the history of G&S using Gilbert's correspondences about the plays and their performances, and many exciting findings from studying the original prompt books and other G&S and D'Oyly Carte archival materials.

Talent Show

The only G&S one-act, this hilarious treasure will be performed twice over the Anniversary weekend. The chorus and supporting members of H.M.S. Pinafore will take on lead roles in Trial by Jury, allowing even more students to showcase their talents.


Sing Along

HOLDEN CHAPEL

Join alumni and current cast members in a sing along of your favorite G&S tunes. Emphasis will be on large choruses and the most popular songs. Singers and non-singers are all welcome!


Founders' Story Session

Listen to our founding members tell stories from the days of long ago, dispel rumors about our founding, and set the record straight once and for all. Don't miss this historic event!


Vocal Master Class

from professional opera singer and HRG&SP alum Margery Hellmold Stone '83 as she works with students and recent graduates on their vocal selections. Both G&S and non-G&S music will be featured.


Set Design Workshop

Professional set designers from three generations, Melissa Goldman '06, Peter Miller '82, and John Magoun '78 will discuss their work and the changes in HRG&SP set design over the years.


Victorian Ball

Break out your Victorian ball-gowns, or your best imitation, for a G&S style formal dance. Waltz to the music of a string sextet while enjoying elaborate desserts and an open bar.


Farewell Brunch
