The Runaround

(If the dragon in the text adventure has been defeated without using the crystal vial of healing potion, it poofs into reality in the team's hands as they begin the runaround.)

You've done well so far, but now our chief programmer Cody Pumbleton's code is unraveling faster than it repaired! Worse, the fractured game has melted together with our own world, warping the very fabric of reality! You must find and restore the code for the game to have any hope of saving Cody, the crystal prince, and the universe itself!

1. Start in front of the castle in which you worked today. High in the sky to your right you see a slanted rectangle with three pieces. Curious, you walk to its base.

2. Stop at the explanatory placard and gaze pensively into the nearby bushes. The crystals behind the bushes fascinate you, but you must move on.

3. Opposite the bushes, you see a lovely fountain. Parched, you hasten toward it, but cannot slake your thirst. In its basin is no water, but you find the first code fragment instead.

4. Bored with the fountain, you turn and see a new set of crystals, just like the first. Approach these crystals.

5. You espy a barrier of stone and wood, but laugh in the face of such paltry inconveniences. Move to the end closest to you.

6. Look, look, a structure made purely of wood! How out of place with the rest of the building it is! It serves a purpose, however-- once you have climbed it, you find the second code fragment.

7. From the top of the structure, let yourself float down the sloping surface to the ground.

8. To your left you glimpse three great arches. The view to the right is far less appealing. You feel yourself inexplicably pulled to the grandeur of the arches. Do not resist.

9. Two flowers bloom before you forever. You take shelter under the leftward blossom. Below the flower, crowded columns cluster closely. What an excellent hiding spot for the third code fragment!

10. Alas, the arches prove too grand for you and you long for simpler things. Aha! With the building to your back, you see a delightful surface for an outdoor meal, if only you had brought rations with you. Proceed towards it, but take the path to the right of it and the nearby building.

11. Keep going forward until another path crosses yours. At this juncture, turn your back to the repeating number and walk toward the forest of spires in the distance. When you reach a great river, stop and cross three bridges. A ghostly white man will guide you.

12. Do you have the courage to retrieve the fourth code fragment from the small circle of iron spikes?

13. Find the way to Charlestown and walk along the path beside it. You pass a large stone gate on your right and cross another bridge to a small island.

14. A valiant steed hath galloped here! Follow its prints to whence it came.

15. You've reached Route 66! Get your kicks and leave the island by the bridge nearest the crystal box.

16. Take heart, for you have reached a milestone! Turn left at the ellipse of sapphire blue.

17. A silver and blue demon stationed near your next bridge will prevent it from burning. Cross the bridge and converse with the seated gentleman. He directs you to collect the fifth code fragment from the nearby box of ebony metal.

18. An eldritch rivulet cuts between two rivers, and a sign forbids you to turn back. So cross the bridge to your left.

19. You see a portal topped with iron lace; pass under and take the path to your right into the woods. You pass more ironworks on your right.

20. As you emerge from the path, you see a low wall flanked by doorways. Proceed to the gap in the wall, then inch forward until you are between two ramps.

21. Tear your gaze away from the simple vertical pipe right in front of your nose, and turn right to look through the arches. Beyond them, you espy double doors atop stairs. Continue onwards towards them.

22. From the foot of the stairs, you see a different colored building. Its black shutters are startling against its light surface. Pass along its left side.

23. Behind this building, you spot a stone L low to the ground. Pass beyond it, taking the path leading directly toward an exit.

24. Through an archway, you see a blue lady hawking sundries; continue under the arch and cross the river toward the damsel.

(At this point, teams encountered the Knight, providing them an opportunity for a shortcut.)

25. There is a deep and gloomy tunnel under a cactus. Enter it and follow it until you reemerge from its rank depths.

26. Turn right at the globes of white and purple blossoms and stride forward boldly. A strange red contraption protrudes from the ironwork to your right. Do not stop to investigate.

27. You pass two wooden portals to your right, but try as you may you cannot enter either. However, tucked into the second door there is a marvelous thing - the sixth code fragment. After gathering it, continue onward.

28. A pair of shiny red eyes watches you. You turn toward them down a passageway. A wall gives you some advice. Ignore the fantastical writing to your right and pass under the maple tree.

29. At the end of the passageway, to one side you see many prohibitive placards. Turn and proceed under them.

30. You notice small black sentinels line the path, and hasten past seven of their number.

31. A vision of azure and gold gleams in the distance! You rush toward it, ignoring the signs that bid you halt and forbid you to turn. Continue through the welcoming arch at the base of the tower.

(At this point, teams encountered the Dragon, a necessary obstacle to obtain the key to unlock the tower.)

32. At last! When you can, persuade another programmer to let you pass through the blue portal to your right.

(Upon entering the tower room, teams find Cody Pumbleton coding furiously at his computer. When he notices his saviors, he quickly snatches up the key fragments, inputs them into his computer, and pronounces the world saved. As a token of his thanks, he hands over a certificate commemorating the occasion.)

The Knight

The knight is sitting by the telephones, looking sorrowful and grave.

Knight: Alas I am the knight of the labyrinth, stranded in this strange world. The way home is long and I have encountered troubles in my quest. I am sorely wounded; is there aught you might do to heal me?

If no healing potion: Then I fear I must die. Find my code and save me within the labyrinth, then onward, go onward to defeat the dragon in my name! Save the prince! Save Cody Pumbleton! (Lays head back, closes eyes)

If healing potion: You have healed me! As thanks for your generous help, here is my code. I will convey you directly to the crystal prince's tower! Follow me, it is quite close and I am certain you will defeat him and rescue Cody Pumbleton! (She springs to her feet and leads the way, almost running and shouting encouragement, to the foot of the Lowell belltower)

The Dragon

The dragon glares malevolently at the approaching travelers at the bottom of the Lowell belltower.

Dragon: You thought you had defeated me with your paltry ice lances! The more fools you, for I still bar your way to the tower of the crystal prince! Here are the keys, only one will admit you to the secret fastness of the tower. You must tell me whom you would like to save, and I will give you that one's key.

They choose a key. The correct choice is the key belonging to the character they haven't yet saved; i.e., the one whose key fragment they have not collected while on the runaround. If they ask for the crystal prince, the dragon should laugh uproariously and reveal there is no such key. Similarly Cody Pumbleton. Otherwise she should hand over the key and mutter balefully. If they choose the wrong one and have to come back, she should repeat her words of before with more smirking.
