You have been called together by the Magisterium, a powerful religious organization that strives to control and purify the world. They have entrusted you with an alethiometer, a compass-like object of great power. They have recently located an artifact which they believe will be instrumental in their plan to purify the world, and they require your help to discover the incantation which will let them harness its power. Their scholars have found sixteen mysterious documents, in two sets of eight, which they believe can be used with the compass to discover this magical incantation. They have provided you with the following instructions:

"To use the compass, it must first be aligned. For this you must resolve the first set of mysteries and assemble their answers into four pairs, which you can use to align the compass.

"Meanwhile, your answers from the second set of mysteries, taken together with no further information, yield a single seed word. This is not, however, the incantation we seek.

"The answers to the second set of mysteries can also be used to ask the compass for a piece of insight. The compass's innermost layer does not directly contribute insight, although it is still essential in discovering what insights the other layers hold. Each of the compass's other layers will reveal two scraps of insight. The compass's advice is always read from the outermost ring to the innermost ring and then back out again. Of course, one who attempts to read an unaligned compass will at best receive no insight, and at worst be led astray.
