JASC Presents:
Internationalism in a New Age: Reflecting on 150 Years of Japan-US Relations
Harvard University, Boston, January 31st 2009
2008 marks the 150th anniversary of the Harris Treaty, signed at Shimoda on July
29th 1858. Forcing the 400-year old Tokugawa regime to abandon its isolationist
policy towards foreigners, it opened free trading and consequently spurred
Japan to modernization. Despite its controversial beginnings, it nevertheless
established an important foundation to the long-term relationship between the
two countries. Although recently, the U.S. has turned its interest to other
emerging Asian superpowers such as China and India, the historical and cultural
ties between Japan and the U.S. cannot be forgotten.
With the theme, "Internationalism in a New Age: Reflecting on 150 years of Japan-U.S. Relations" we wish to present to the public the views of JASC
participants as they discuss the past, present and future relations of the two
countries. Throughout its history, our relationship has seen both immense
triumphs and trying frictions. Yet our shared commitment to cultural exchange
and global mindedness has transcended economic hostility and global conflict.
As our partnership reaches this milestone, we hope to reflect on the progress
we have made while forging joint solutions to new challenges.

JASC Presents Project Overview
The JASC Presents student discussion panel series is a program designed to
continue the academic discussions and cultural exchange that take place during
the Japan-America Student Conference by extending our conversations to local
communities in both countries. Our hope is that by sharing the new ideas and
insights that students have gained through their participation in JASC, we can
take a step closer to achieving our goal of impacting society and spreading our
results beyond the boundaries of the conference itself.
Goals of JASC Presents
The JASC Presents goals consists of four main elements:
To support the goals of the Japan-America Student Conference by presenting and
reflecting upon the fruits of our academic discussions during the months between conferences.
To enrich local communities through the exchange of ideas and cultural values.
To expose local students to the goals and ideals of JASC in order to attract and
inspire a future generation of delegates.
To further promote and enhance the reputation of JASC as a means of aiding
recruitment and other efforts of the JASC EC.
