[Jim]: I joined the Harvard faculty in 1974, and Sue & I are now in our tenth year as Co-Masters of Pforzheimer House. I received my undergraduate degree from Gonzaga University and Ph.D. from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and then was at Johns Hopkins for three years before coming to Harvard. Currently I am the Alexander Agassiz Professor of Biological Oceanography in both the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. I also serve as Head Tutor for the Environmental Science and Public Policy concentration. My research interests address the regulation of plankton productivity in the sea, and focus in particular on ecosystem cycling of nitrogen in diverse oceanic regions. In addition, I have a long history of involvement in national and international planning and implementation efforts relating to the study of climate and global environmental change. My favorite pastimes include the history of polar exploration, fly fishing, telemark skiing, and furniture building.
[Sue]: I received my undergraduate degree from San Diego State University in biology, and have taken post-graduate courses in biology, early childhood education, and information technology. I've worked as a pre-school teacher, an administrator for an environmental non-profit, an associate editor for a weekly scientific journal and as an administrator here at Harvard. My favorite pastimes include contemporary fiction, quilting, gardening, hiking, alpine wild flowers, and cross-country skiing.

While I didn’t always know that I wanted to be a college administrator and educational researcher, I can’t imagine that things could have turned out any other way. I’ve lived most of my adult life in college residence halls, which suits me very well. I grew up in northwest Ohio between the towns of Hicksville and Defiance. (Really. And that probably describes me quite well.) I still have a deep and abiding respect for the Midwest, although the northeast is starting to feel like home.
After college I put my BA in Botany from Miami University (Ohio) to good use as a Residence Hall Director at SUNY Cortland, and then ran a co-op dorm at the University of Maine in Orono. I returned to Miami University to complete a MS in College Student Personnel before I came to the Graduate School of Education at Harvard to study civic engagement and adult development. I completed my doctorate in Learning & Teaching in June 2006. My dissertation, a qualitative study of an undergraduate course at Harvard called "Practicing Democracy," looks at the relationship between the pedagogy and students' developmental perspectives. Last fall I accepted a position at the Derek Bok Center for Teaching & Learning. In addition to working with faculty and graduate students to improve the quality of teaching, I’m responsible for the Activity-Based Learning (ABL) project. I come to Pforzheimer by way of Quincy House, where I was a Resident Tutor for three years. I’m available to discuss academic or personal issues you have, of course, but if you’re also in the mood to talk about gardening, running, relationships, the humbling experience of learning to golf or row, making healthy choices in the dining hall, storage solutions, or bargain shopping in Boston...find me! |

I grew up in Adrian, Michigan, where twenty-one thousand people live. Five thousand of them used to work for Ford Motors. Now nine hundred work at the new prison, and the rest hang out, sipping Diet Pepsi and watching agribusiness thrive. I graduated from high school having read Catcher in the Rye, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and twenty-four years of Uncanny X-Man comic books. I also composed lyrics for the rock ensemble Scarecrow Boat, whose hits included: “Everybody Loves Me But the Girl I Love”. My formal education entailed two years at Deep Spring College, two years at Harvard College, two years at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and three geological epochs in the Harvard University English department, including this one. I’m currently writing a dissertation on how the CIA secretly funded writing workshops in the 1960s. |

Greetings, Pfoho! I'm happy to be beginning my 3rd year as the House Administrator in Pforzheimer. With two Pfyears under my belt, I have a pretty good grasp now of the who-what-when-where-why of Pfoho. I hope you'll feel free to stop by or email anytime regarding student housing issues, room reservations, special events, or any other general Pfoho questions. Before shifting up this way, I spent a year as the Housing Officer for the College and before that, quite a few years in "another House" (suffice it to say, I knew Ben Rahn back when). I enjoyed the global view of the Houses from my position in University Hall, but ultimately realized that I'm happier in the more community oriented setting of a House. Aside from my Pfoho identity, I studied music as an undergrad and am especially interested in early music. I'm also a big tennis fan and do my best to get into the Blodgett pool as often as possible. I look forward to another great year in Pfoho. |

After failing to convince the folks at University Hall to convert the staff kitchen into a posh dining hall, I had no choice but to work in a House. Luckily, there was a vacancy near the "largest semi-enclosed open space at Harvard." So here I am. I graduated from Dartmouth in 2000 with a degree in Government and I am currently pursuing a Master of Liberal Arts degree here at Harvard. I will be working on my thesis this year so if any of you seniors need someone to whine to, my door is open. Also, those of you who would like reasons not to go to architecture school will find me a useful guide as well. My interests include writing, politics, cultural studies, and rejecting party registration forms that aren't submitted by the appropriate deadline. I look forward to a great second year at Pfoho and to helping you dig yourself out of the mountain of carbon-copied forms that you will have to sign before you change a class, get a recommendation, or go anywhere near that piece of parchment you've been eyeing for some time now. See you around. |

Hola a todos! I was born and grew up in El Salvador. I've been a Cambridge resident since 1991. I received my Associate degree in Architecture 5 years ago at Instituto Tecnologico Centroamericano ITCA, El Salvador. I'm married to my my lovely wife, Haydee. We have a two year old boy named Andre and he likes to keep me up at night. Both he and I love soccer, so much so that I couldn't drag him away from the TV during the World Cup! We also just had our second child on September 19th - another boy, named Diego. I also coach the Cambridge Youth under 11 soccer team. As you can tell, soccer is a big part of my life as well as being part of the Pfoho community. Please don't hesitate to stop by and say Hola! |
