FAQ for Sophomores
Q: What's a Summer Preferencing Form?
A: Sophomores are housed based on their averaging groups and lottery
numbers through a process called summer preferencing. Averaging groups
will be assigned housing based on the options they list in the order of
their group lottery number. It's very important to list both general and
specific options in case your lottery number doesn't permit placing in the
specific housing requests you have made. You can pick the rooms you want
from the list of available rooms. That list is available at
http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/pfoho/v2/pfohome/roomlist.php

Remember SUMMER PREFERENCING FORMS ARE DUE JUNE 30.
Q: I'm a bit confused by all this Pfoho terminology: "Blocking Group", "Averaging Group", "Summer Preferencing Form".
A: Your blocking group are the people you agreed to get assigned to a
specific house with during your freshman year. Your averaging group is the
group of students you wanted to average your lottery numbers with (NOTE:
The blocking group and the averaging group CAN be different). The Summer
Preferencing Form MUST include ALL of your Averaging Group. That is, the
people who you picked lottery numbers with must ALL be on the Summer
Preferencing Form.
Q: I don't want to live with my averaging group. Can I fill
out a different summer preferencing form?
A: There is no need to because being on the same summer preferencing form
doesn't mean that you have to live together. The reason you must be on the
same summer preferencing form is fairness: I grant preferences in order of
lottery number. For instance a group of six people in which two of the
people don't get along with the other four could request a quad and a double
so that they don't have to live together. You can also request not to live
near each other.
Q: What happens if I don't fill out a summer preferencing form?
A: If you are still scheduled to return in the fall, you will be assigned
housing after all the other students' preferences are filled.
