Come and join the Progressive Jewish Alliance as we hear from two speakers from the New Israel Fund. PJA is bringing Morad El-Sana and Gil Gan-Mor to Hillel to discuss human and civil rights issues in Israel. They will speak on Palestinian civil rights, Bedouin rights, LGBT rights, and education within Israel. The New Israel Fund advances civil rights and social justice for all Israelis, and it is widely credited with transforming the social justice and human rights communities in Israel. All are welcome.
Morad El-Sana has worked as a staff attorney at the Negev office of Adalah: Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, where he petitioned the Supreme Court on behalf of education rights for Bedouin citizens. He has also worked as a legal advisor for Community Advocacy and has provided pro bono representation for Bedouin families in housing demolition cases.
Gil Gan-Mor served most recently as a lawyer for HaMoked, Center for the Defense of the Individual, providing legal assistance to Palestinians whose rights have been violated by Israeli authorities. Prior to that, he was an intern with ACRI. He also works as a pro bono legal adviser for Aguda, the leading LGBT organization in Israel; runs "Gay-Bar", a legal forum of LGBT lawyers, law students and human rights activists; and manages the legal forum of IGY, the Israeli Gay Youth website.
New Israel Fund’s Israel-U.S. Civil Liberties Law Program provides academic and professional experience in the U.S. to Israeli lawyers specializing in civil rights. There are 50 program graduates who form the core of the civil rights bar in Israel – as academics, community organizers, founders of non-profit organizations, and litigators. Ha’aretz called the creation of the law program one of the “two crucial decisions [that] changed the face of public law in Israel.”
