Name and Gender Changes
Name Changes
Students
A legal name change is required in order to change name on University records. Students have the option to use their first initial and last name if they have not changed their name legally. Currently work is being done to determine a way to establish a Preferred Name field. For more info: students contact registrar’s office, undergraduates request to speak with Lynn Dunham.
Names on diplomas will never be changed after they are granted even if a legal name change and/or transitioning has taken place after graduation.
Staff
Staff should contact Chris Abbuhl, Associate Director of Employee Relations and Policy, from Human Resources: 617 495 9294, chris_abbuhl@harvard.edu.
Change in Gender Designation
Students
To request a change in gender designation, students must contact the registrar’s office. Undergraduates should ask for Lynn Dunham. Currently, the understanding is that one must provide documentation of sexual reassignment surgery to change gender designation on records; however, this should be clarified with the specific department/school.
Staff and Faculty
Staff and faculty should contact Chris Abbuhl, Associate Director of Employee Relations and Policy, from Human Resources: 617 495 9294, chris_abbuhl@harvard.edu.
ID Changes
If your appearance has changed significantly due to transitioning you can have a new ID photo taken FREE of charge. If you have any difficulties with this: Students contact Dean Judith Kidd for assistance, staff contact HR.
