HRFC v. UConn
The HRFC traveled south to UConn for the first match of the 2009 Spring Season. After a productive off season spent in the gym, the Harvard men were looking to fine-tune their game skills while showcasing their new size and fitness.
The game started off strong for the HRFC, and wing Khaki Burke (2010) ran in an early try from the side. Jonny Miller (2010) had a good kick for the conversion, the first of a perfect came for the fly half in that regard. Some hard rucking against the large UConn pack put Harvard within reach of another score, and scum half Nick Rizzo (2009) punched one through for to put the game at 14-0. UConn ended the first of three 3 minute periods with a try of their own, but were unable to convert the kick.
Jonny Miller started out the second half with a try of his own, but UConn followed up in quick fashion with three unconverted tries of their own. However, Harvard was able to lock down on defense in the last few minutes and managed the win, 21-20. Though UConn showed a great size advantage, Harvard won on its superior skill, speed, and heart.
In B-Side news, Harvard defeated UConn 10-5 on the backs of tries from Nick Torres (2011) and Jeff Overall (2011). Overall, an A-Side flanker, surprised everyone and showed remarkable skill and unprecedented speed playing on the B-Side wing. Hard rucking and tackling from all the Killer B’s made this game a real excitement and showed outstanding improvement from the team’s newer players.
In injury news, Khaki Burke is sidelined for several weeks with a broken toe, but hopes to be back by season’s end.
