One woman whose coworkers were laid off last year describes the outcome of the Bread and Roses action at the Harvard Medical School on April 6, 2009. The translation is followed by the original Spanish text.

"We felt at that moment a very real sense of camaraderie. It was very meaningful. These are the moments that show Harvard that we are in solidarity. I know that if today it’s you, I'll be there, because tomorrow it could be me. We have to be united. I feel all over again the memory of the clamor of our silence, of that real strength. We looked at each other and the sight was as powerful as any shout. When I remember the look on our bosses' faces, on the superintendent's face, I can tell you we felt strong.

Less than three months later, laid-off workers started to return, one by one. The bosses knew that we were watching and we wouldn't accept the company bringing in just anyone off the street. At that moment, when we broke bread and left roses [for the laid off workers], we knew our strength was in union. Let the bosses worry about their money. That's all they understand. We have fraternity."

Se sintió en este momento un compañerismo bien real. Fue bien significativo. Éstos son minutos para mostrar a Harvard que somos solidarios. Sé si hoy eres tú, ahí estaré, porque mañana podría ser yo. Tenemos que ser solidarios. Resentí la imagen de este silencio de reclamo, de una fortaleza verdadera. Un miraba al otro y la mirada era tan fuerte como cualquier grito. Cuando recuerdo de las caras que nuestros jefes tenían, que nuestro superintendente tenia, sí, puedo decir que somos fuertes.

Menos que tres meses después, los trabajadores empezaron a regresar, uno a uno. Los jefes sabían que nosotros estábamos de vigilia y que no íbamos a aceptar que la compañía trae un cualquier de la calle. En este momento, cuando comemos el pan y dejamos las rosas, supimos que con la unión hay la fuerza. Deja que los jefes preocupan con su dinero. Es la única cosa que ellos entienden. Nosotros tenemos fraternidad.
