Stand for Security Pledge for Alumni

Using the form below, you can send a letter to Fern Groebe, Assistant Director of Gift Management for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Bill Murphy, the Director of Labor Relations, and Interim President Derek Bok. Please edit the letter as you see fit. By sending this letter, you are pledging that you will not donate to Harvard until they agree to the demands in our petition, which are below:
We, the undersigned, support the efforts of Harvard security officers to win a fair contract as members of the Harvard community. We support their right to have a voice at work and to provide for themselves and their families. We demand that:
  • Harvard accept its responsibility for all campus workers, directly hired and subcontracted, in accordance with its commitment made in 2002.
  • Harvard make a public statement supporting the following four standards for its security officers.
  • Harvard require that these four standards be included in the officers' contract with AlliedBarton Security, a company hired by the university to provide campus security:
    1. Fair Wages. Security officers face a rising cost of living and the daily challenge of making ends meet. Their wages and benefits must be on par with those of Harvard's janitors and dining hall workers, which they are not. Wages must also be on par with those of security officers at comparable area universities, like MIT, which they are not.
    2. Steady, Full-Time Work. Security officers need consistent pay, not just fair pay. They must be guaranteed full-time work schedules that ensure a steady income and a stable quality of life.
    3. Fair Procedures. Security officers cannot be disciplined or fired without just cause, due process, and transparent investigations with union input. Security officers must be able to file complaints against both direct (AlliedBarton) and indirect (Harvard) employers.
    4. Right to Organize. Every security officer at Harvard has the right to union membership, under federal law. Officers must not be misclassified as "managers" to deprive them of this right.
