On to the next year…

Between becoming an official organization, hosting the 2nd wintersession workshop, sending SOL’s first team to CUPSI, hosting numerous slams and open mics, and collaborating with groups from STAHR to Real Talk @ 5 Linden to the Radcliffe Union of Students to the Progressive Jewish Alliance…it’s been an incredible year! Thanks everyone for your poetry, enthusiasm, and support this past year! We’re excited for some great shows, slams, and sweet sweet art this coming year, and can’t wait to see what it brings!

Welcome back

If you’re reading this page then you’ve already made the best move of the year – shown an interest in Speak Out Loud (SOL). If you’ve never heard of SOL, here’s what we’re all about. Ready to get excited?

SOL is a relatively new club at Harvard. Founded only two years ago by the lovely ladies Cassandra and Krya, SOL has taken tremendous flight and is now one of the most up and coming group on campus. Through competitive slams, community writing workshops, and laid back open mics, SOL promotes poetry and ignites discussion across campus. Spoken word is an urban art form that lends itself to conversations about race, gender, sexuality, pressing social issues and identity in general. But really you can slam about whatever the hell you want.

Exciting events that SOL achieved last year alone:

  • Became an official club recognized by Harvard
  • Hosted two competitive slams
  • Held open mics about once a month (including memorable ones such as a discussion on mental health and star watching)
  • Held a week-long winter session workshop with incredible visiting slam poets
  • Wrote and sold poem-grams at Valentine’s Day and delivered/performed them across campus
  • Sent a team to CUPSI in California (the national college slam competition)!

SOL has not only spread its voice across Harvard and the greater Boston area but nationally as well.

Whether you want to join in on the slams, attend a few workshops, or simply watch our incredible open mics, SOL welcomes you. Being a part of SOL will open your eyes to an entirely new type of talent at Harvard that you never thought was possible.

If you want to learn more, come to our info meeting on Sunday Sept. 9 at 2 PM in Sever 110.
