I use a rather
large, highly pressurized oven called an autoclave to sterilize
my tools when I work with retroviruses. I was intrigued by themelting
of the plastic pipettes encased in the red biohazard bag and decided
to play around with the composition of the pipettes, gloves, and
bag to engage with ideas of waste and reuse, accident and agency
in a very material way. I am interested in the necessity of the
increasingly sterile exploration of life, in the inherent conflicts
of addressing biological issues with artificial tools, and in
the dynamics of performativity and gender in scientific exploration.
