Style Profile: Tobi Tikolo

I met Tobi Tikolo in my expos class last semester. Tall, dark and always clad in the classiest clothes, he’s the kind of dresser who makes you resent the perfectly good clothes on your back.

Every Thursday, I’d be stumbling into class in yesterday’s skinny jeans and whatever sweater I could pull most easily from atop my dresser and right behind me would come Tobi, immaculately dressed per usual, not a hair or silk ascot or button out of place, sauntering in with a smart leather briefcase and a disarming smile.

Ariel Walzer reports on this dapper freshman’s unique fashion sensibilities.

Interview:

Where do you draw your inspiration? Inspiration for me has evolved from different stages of my life and places I have lived. As such, instead of being inspired by a person or an era, I am inspired by the timelessness of expression and how ideally fashion choices can tell you a lot about where a person is in their life.

What is your favourite piece in your wardrobe and why? My favourite piece that I own is a shaggy wool jumper I bought in Scotland. Reason for this is that I bought it from a random factory while I was up there, it doesn’t have a label because they produce for a bunch of different brands, and it doesn’t have a distinct colour, but nonetheless it is fantastic. The texture, the attention to detail, the unique feel as I don’t even know where it is from, they all come together in some unspoken way to form this phenomenal creation.

How would you describe your style? I would have to describe my style as an expression of myself. On the surface it is very classic as I wear bow ties and suspenders every once in a while, but at the same time I wear a crocodile on my lapel, have an obsession with skull motif socks, and there is always the odd piece like my skull motif corduroys. Thus it really is very tongue-in-cheek. Very me.

What’s your signature look? Signature look? That is really difficult. It would almost certainly include a button-down shirt of some sort and brown shoes. I have a thing for brown shoes. It would also almost certainly also include some sort of neckwear. That would probably be it.

Do you ever have days where you just want to wear sweatpants and a t-shirt? If not where do you find the motivation? I certainly do, like everyone else. Only difference is that it is slightly difficult to decide to wear sweatpants and a t-shirt when you don’t own the former. ;)

What would your ideal girl wear? My ideal girl would just wear anything that symbolised her. That could be anything from sweatpants and a t-shirt to a mink coat and stilettos. Whatever allowed her to express herself to the extent that she wanted would be perfect.

Would you rather wear denim overalls or Crocs? If I picked one it would go against everything I just said about expression. Did I just dodge a bullet?

Do you feel as though you identify with the old school Harvard look? Most definitely! I do not in any way regret growing up now and I would not swap places with someone from that time, but I have the utmost respect and admiration for the tradition and timelessness of fashion in those days.
