HAS: The Harvard Anime Society
H A S

Welcome to Harvard Anime Society (HAS). HAS's goal is to bring Japanese Animation to Harvard University and its community. We are an activity oriented club, and that activity is to watch Anime The evolution of the club is explained below. To do justice to the club, this is what people think. . .

members nonmembers
Anime It is cool. The art form is Cartoons... Encompassing, from social satire to slap-stick comedy. Very enriching. Why can't they go watch movies?
Organization None. To organize is to sacrifice enthusiasm under the pressure of bureacracy. You can't beat XXX club. We have all sorts of committees, meetings, discussions...
Members We are cool. Get a life.
Non-members Come brethren. We love thee. Come embrace your transcendental ego. Huh... We are fine. We have a life.
Conversation Topics The motif in Iria and Tylor. Use of Beethoven Symphony in Dragon Half. Miyazaki's films as a reflection on modern industrial countries' problems. Classes, weather, lunch, girls, med school...

We are an enthusiastic lot. We know each other by name. We are willing to give money to the club (i.e. We are crazy). We subtitle animation (or try). We have a library. We show animation every other week. We show animation on TV/VCRs. We show animation on big screens. We love what we do.

         ('94-present)
The present HAS traces its most direct root to Michael Kim, who is the founder of the Winthrop House Anime Show, the creator of the present HAS constitution and the former HAS president. In the process of creating a real official club from the Group, HAS absorbed members from HRSFA's anime sig, as well as the earlier Dunster House Anime Society headed by Richard Uyeyama. HAS passed a transition period as HRAS, but due to the awful acronym, it adopted its present name.
At the moment, HAS is closely associated with Japan Society. It still shares functions with HRSFA, and we intend to keep close ties with HRTV.

Projects

At present, we are involved with these projects:

Library:
We are forever working on expanding our club library.
Sound Library:
We have our unique library of anime music and soundtracks.
Large Screen Show:
We put together an anime show every semester on large screen in Harvard University with other friends.
Making Projects:
Our last ongoing project is to find more ongoing projects.
Charter Membership List
This is the charter membership list that was
submitted to the dean of students office when I went ahead and got us
recognized by the college. I think it was Gio that convinced me to get off
my butt and do it. We'd been having showings before this point, of course.

This was culled from our mailing list so there are some non-Harvard students
here. Notable members are Devin McLachlan (a cousin of Sarah!), Alex Wong (a
fansub translator back in the day) and our charter officers (Ben, Gio, Royce
and myself). Some of the regulars back then also included Larry Lee,
John-Marc Chandonia, Hsien Wong.
