We here at HAS are very excited for this event, and we hope you are too! We'd especially like to thank Manga, Ent. and FUNimation Productions, Ltd. for permission to show these spectacular movies, and the Harvard Foundation for funding this wonderful night. (Images used with permission as well).
Castle of Cagliostro (1979) was the directorial debut of Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Sevice, Spirited Away). This beautiful film is gorgeously rendered in animation, with a wildly funny script and involving plot. It is a must see film for all anime lovers, a great introduction to anime to anime novices, and a fantastic film for people of all ages. Lupin III: Dragon of Doom, aka Zantetsu Sword is on Fire, is a 1994 feature film length special which has been recently been released in the United States.
Interestingly enough, Lupin III and several other characters reference actual historical and literary figures:
Lupin the III is supposedly the direct descendent of French 20th century novelist Maurice Leblanc's Arsene Lupin. Inspector Zenigata, the policeman who is perpetually on the Lupin III case, is the fictionally the seventh-generation descendant of the famous Edo-Period detective, Zenigata Heji. Ishikawa Goemon is designed to be the thirteenth-generation descendant of the notorious samurai-turned bandit Ishikawa Goemon, who, when caught, was boiled in oil for his crimes.
