Utena MOVIE (whoo-hoo!)

This was the day after the Utena-thon...started
Fri night, ended Sat morning. Our brains were
so damaged we had even tried to watch the musical.
Um...I was asleep for this showing. I don't
remember much. KareKano is good stuff. Utena
movie...stylish...pretty...

KareKano 3-6
Key the Metal Idol 1
Astroboy 1
Card Captor Sakura 22

Astroboy is much better (and, of course, wronger)
than you'd think. Good title to see how (well-done)
dubs can be a nice thing.

KareKano 7-10
Key the Metal Idol 2

I couldn't go....pity me...

KareKano 11-12
Key the Metal Idol 3-4
Card Captor Sakura 24-26

KareKano: Miyazawa is my hero. Her enemies are
routed.
Key: Kinda freaky how there are people named
Sakura (her ?friend) and Tomoyo (prof's assistant)
in Key...
CCS: 2 of my fav episodes! The time card episode
(Touya backstory ^^ plus Li being sweet), and
mirror ep (probably my fav CCS...has nothing to do
with Touya being the man in it of course...).

--------------------------------------------------
Mar2: Fri shoujo showings start again (finally!)

We began with Hana Yori Dango, a seemingly light-
hearted comedy that is about ceaseless suffering.
yay! We watched 24 episodes. In a night. This
was not a healthy thing to do. Beware the
addictive powers of HYD.

KareKano 13-14
Key the Metal Idol 5
Card Captor Sakura 28-29
Laputa

KareKano: Tsubasa meets her cute half-bro.
Troubles are resolved.
Key: confuses me. Strange man with doll fetish.
Creepy. Strange monk of snake god. Creepy.
CCS: Oh no! Our cakes have come out too sweet!
Could it be the work of a Clow Card? This time
they've gone too far! (We also find out that Rika
likes her sensei because....he reminds her of her
father...yeah)

Laputa: Ghibli is good stuff. Note the deep
symbolism of both Sheeta and Dola having the same
hairdo. Note also Pazu's amazing strength and
dexterity. None can resist the story-telling
wonder that is Ghibli.
Producer: Isao Takahata
Writer & Director: Hayao Miyazaki

--------------------------------------------------
Mar6: Shoujo was RoV continued from Fall term,
when Oniisama E distracted us. Good, good stuff.
Oscar is damn cool. Much Puzzle fighter as well.

Sailor Moon R Movie

A fire drill drove us from Loker to Mather.

KareKano: A very moving ep about our heroine's
father, almost entirely in b&w. This is a
brilliant and gorgeous series so far.

Key: This series continues to send messages that
it is on the verge of something good and
interesting, but has yet to get there. Key is now
hanging with a cult. Creepy.

CCS: Ep 30: Touya *could* have gone to interhigh, but
didn't want to miss work. (Why does he need to work
so much anyway?) There's also some stuff about an
injured Clow Card. Ep 31: People in Japan are so
used to Godzilla and such monsters attacking that
no one notices a huge Sakura and monster duking it
out. Ep 32: The requisite body-switching episode.
Hear Li talk with an "Osaka accent!" Hear Kero
talk normally! See Yukito pick up Sakura's "stuffed
animal!" CCS proves conclusively that there is no
such thing as too cute.

Sailor Moon R: The Movie:
I can do no better than Katy's masterful description:

"Yes, there is such a thing as good Sailor Moon.
Very good Sailor Moon. And this movie is arguably
Sailor Moon at its finest. It was one of the
first directorial projects of our [our?] beloved
Ikuhara "Utena" Kunihiko, and his influence can be
seen in the movie's overbearing flower motif and,
urm, gender issues. Plus it has "Moon Revenge,"
which some claim to be the best song in existence.
Really."

I was very impressed by SM... it was themes of
friendship that got me... although I'm certainly a
fan of "urm, gender issues" as well.
(Speaking of which, since everyone was in my room
anyway, I made them all watch Patariro. Certainly
the epitome of it's genre...whatever that is.)

Card Captor Sakura 33-35
Umi ga Kikoeru (aka I Can Hear the Sea, aka Ocean Waves)

KareKano: Arima returns from InterHigh for (heh)
Kendo as no.1 in all Japan. His relationship with
Miyazawa reaches a new level. Sweet, tasteful,
but not cloying.

CCS: Dangerous ice-skating (very cute). Sakura and
Yukito team up for a town quiz game (very very cute).
Ep 35: The Christmas episode! Amazingly,
mind-bendingly cute. A thought...why does Touya
have so many jobs? Most people would just work
more hours at one or two, no? Does he keep getting
fired? Easily bored? Sexually harassed?

Umi ga Kikoeru (aka the Ghibli no one watches):
gio was right when he said that by the end I'd
hate the girl, but then again none of the main
characters in this high-school romance(?) story
seemed very sympathetic (well, Katy liked Matsuno,
but it doesn't count if it's for seiyuu reasons).
Does get points for a nice feeling of understated
realism, however. The Director, Tomomi Mochizuki,
isn't a usual of the Ghibli stable (he also did
Koko wa Greenwood, which has some of the "everyday"
feel, but nicer characters).

What happened to Key? Time came to show it...and
no one felt like watching. Rather than force
ourselves, we just watched more KareKano and CCS.
Key is part of the club libray, however, so any
members can see the end on their own if they wish.

Iria 1-2
Kenji's Spring

KK: taking a break to focus on characters I don't
care as much about. Not quite as good as other
KareKano, but still very good.

CCS: Snow, Voice, and Strawberry picking. Just
how many jobs does Touya have? Really. Why? I
ask, why?

Iria: We figured we should see the anime of the
girl previously featured on our front page.
(Apparently Ben...had a crush on her? ^^;;) Nice
SF bounty-hunter action/adventure w/ requisite
cute kids and all. Her cute blond brother (who we
hope is not *really* dead) shares a voice-actor w/
Utena's Akio...O_o

Kenji's Spring: no doubt this would have made more
sense if one was familiar with the author's life
and work (as it was, most of the metaphors were
lost on me). However, the story was lovely, and
the visuals were *stunning*--the kind of film that
deserves to be on a huge screen. This film
deserves a rep as one of the biggies.

Card Captor Sakura 39-41

Eva-thon this weekend! Yeah baby!

CCS:
39: Sakura gets sick. Touya is the man.
40: Li-kun's dream is cute. Tomoyo's is...um...
41: Literary fest planning! Of course, since this
is CLAMP, we are unsurprised when casting for
"Sleeping Beauty" ignores traditional gender roles.

FUN FACT: Yukito and Shinji have the same voice
actor. Now watch Eva again, and feel your brain
hurting!

KareKano 22-24 (3!)
Card Captor Sakura 42-44
Iria 3-4

KK: Like we needed *another* summery episode...and
(even) more on the play. Still even not-so-hot KK
is good anime...and the Asapin, Arima, PeroPero dj
featured made everything o.k.

CCS: The much-anticipated school play "Sleeping
Beauty." Li-kun is determined to be a good
princess since Yukito-san is watching.
--Mei-ling left and we were actually sad to see her
go. The ultra-cute flashbacks made me want to
root for her to get together with Li (Sakura can
have Tomoyo or whatever). Ah well.
--Finally, Yukito and Muzuki-sensei face-off in an
archery contest. Touya has perhaps his finest
moment (not many guys can be cool dressed as a
giant teddy bear...) But suddenly...

Iria: Yay! Bob is alive (kinda). We get a clone
of Iria's brother, but it's all evil and ugly (and
how does this explain hearing his voice over her
com?) Kei's gender is still in question. They
kill off yet another of the characters I like;
mourning consists of plans to pig out "in his
memory." Um, yeah.
