This branch supports the goal of knitting for the community by creating items, such as scarves, hats, blankets, and mittens to be donated to local charity organizations, such as the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter and St. James Homeless Shelter.

The guests that frequent these shelters often lack much-needed warm clothing. Donations are frequently requested and particularly when winter approaches. Seldom do shelters receive an abundance of items or even enough to meet the need; when donations are given, they generally occur at specific times of the year, like Christmas. Additionally, homeless individuals may often feel abandoned by the world, especially since they often depend on the good will of others and are not in contact with their families. The recipients of these hand-knitted items are provided with much-needed warm garments and imparted with a sense of belonging and connection that comes with knowing that someone cares enough to put time, effort, and love into making these items for them. It is with these knitted items that students are able to help fill a community need, and in turn, are afforded the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the world we live in and its complex issues though these valuable interactions with others.

After contacting local shelters to determine the type of garments needed, students on campus will obtain supplies to knit the requested items. Twice each semester, the handmade items will be collected for donation to the previously contacted organizations.
