| This program involves bringing students from Harvard and other colleges together to teach guests and students at local shelters and schools how to knit on a regular basis. Thus, knitting is used as a way to create opportunity to exchange and share ideas experiences in a safe, comforting environment.
In addition we hope that by teaching them how to knit and getting to know them on a personal level, we will help foster a sense of confidence in their own skills and abilities to help them become leaders in their own communities. The guests and students can pass on their learned skill by teaching and mentoring others in similar situations and can also positively impact others by donating what they make to hospital patients. Not only will the guests and students gain a sense of fulfillment in their own work, but they will also be empowered through the act of giving. Equipped with this skill, they can knit garments for themselves and loved ones, as well as sell their knitted items to acquire an additional source of income.
Weekly hour-long classes involve getting to know the students, teaching basic skills in reading patterns, reviewing knitting technique, choosing affordable supply packages, celebrating and displaying finished products, and providing an avenue through which to donate or sell the products.
