To the Class of 2015:
Congratulations and welcome to Harvard! We at the Bach Society Orchestra
are greatly looking forward to meeting you, and inviting you to be a part
of the musical scene here on campus. It may be difficult to sift through the
hundreds of opportunities offered to undergraduates, but if you have any
questions, music or otherwise, please don't hesitate to ask any one of us.
If you would like to play in an orchestra as an extracurricular activity, we
invite you to come audition for the Bach Society Orchestra (affectionately
known as BachSoc). We are a completely student-run chamber orchestra,
representing a strong musical tradition at Harvard for the last 57 years.
Performing in four concerts a year, we are committed to high-quality music
and fostering a close-knit community. This season, we are tackling some
fantastic repertoire all across the classical music spectrum, including
symphonies by Beethoven, Schumann, and Schubert, Debussy's Prélude
à l'après-midi d'un faune, Bartok's Divertimento for Strings and Dvorak's
Serenade for Winds (all in one concert!), a beautiful work for tape and
orchestra by Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, and a collaboration
with the Harvard University Choir in December. We also are planning an
early retreat to St. Mark's School in September, to be added to our other
social activities throughout the year, including many post-concert parties
and the annual Feed.
We look forward to meeting you when you arrive in the fall! Please feel
free to contact us by email at bachsoc@hcs.harvard.edu.
Our website also includes an FAQ section that answers
other questions about BachSoc and music in general at Harvard. Enjoy the rest
of your summer, and see you in September.
Sincerely,
Jesse Wong '12, Music Director
On Behalf of the Senior Staff of the Bach Society Orchestra
