Greetings from the Committee

Hi! We’re Cabot’s Pre-law Committee. Whether in our last year of law school (“3Ls”) or in the first, we have all recently navigated the law school admissions process. Our goal is to make applying to law school as painless as possible, so feel free to contact any one of us if you have questions or concerns. To be assigned a non resident pre-law tutor, which is required if you’re applying this fall, please contact the Chairs of the Pre-Law Committee, Michael Aktipis (maktipis@law.harvard.edu) and Julie Kobick (jkobick@jd10.law.harvard.edu ), with any general questions about applying to law school, or about the Cabot House Pre-Law Committee's advising process.

Non-Resident Tutors

Maria Banda

  • Hi! I'm Maria. I am currently a 3L at the law school and one of your pre-law non-resident tutors. I grew up in Toronto, Canada, and spent several years studying and working in England and Switzerland before coming to Harvard. So whether you have questions about starting law school straight away, taking some time off to travel or work abroad, or are curious about alternatives to a legal education (I am still working on a doctorate in international relations at Oxford), I would be happy to chat. I look forward to getting to know many of you this year!

  • I am a second year law school student excited to be joining Cabot House this year. I grew up in Los Angeles and attended Columbia University, where I majored in English and Political Science. After college, I went straight to law school, and I would be happy to talk about the pros and cons of that decision. After my 1L year I worked at a law firm in Bangkok, and next summer I am planning again to return to law firm life. I also have experience teaching and tutoring the LSAT and am looking forward to working with you!

Tarun Chhabra

Greetings, folks. I'm a second-year student Harvard Law School and a doctoral candidate in international relations at Oxford. My academic interests are in public international law and the politics of international organizations. I studied international relations and Russian language and literature as an undergraduate at Stanford and then studied in Moscow for a year after graduation. I then worked at the United Nations in New York and, while in graduate school, as an advisor on non-proliferation issues for the Norwegian Foreign Ministry. I grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana. In addition to pre-law advising, I am happy to advise folks considering applications for the Fulbright, Marshall and Soros Fellowships. I try to dine at Cabot most Wednesdays, but feel free to contact me by e-mail in order to set up an appointment for another time.

Zach Elsea

Hello! I'm a 2L at Harvard Law School. I hail from sunny Southern California and graduated with a degree in Government from Harvard in 2006, where I was involved in different International Relations Council activities and Habitat for Humanity. I worked in management consulting in Washington, DC after college and studied at Oxford University in the U.K. before returning to Harvard for law school. At HLS I work on the International Law Journal and am on the board of the American Constitution Society. If you have any questions at all about applying to law school or about life as a law student, don't hesitate to email me or find me around the dining hall. I'm also happy to discuss on-campus recruiting, international study and travel, books and movies, current events and politics, or pretty much anything else.

Jared English

In May 2004, Jared graduated from Michigan State University (MSU) with two Bachelors degrees: one in International Relations and the other in Finance. After graduating from MSU he attended the London School of Economics (LSE) on a Marshall Scholarship, reading for a Masters of Science in Political Economy and a PhD in International Relations. His PhD work examined financial market liberalization in Indonesia, Taiwan and Thailand. In addition to being a Marshall Scholar, Jared is also a 2003 Truman Scholar and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Currently, Jared is starting his first year at Harvard Law School.

Xiaoyu Gu

Hi everyone! I'm a second year in the JD/MBA program at Harvard and am thrilled to be returning as a non-resident pre-law (and business) tutor at Cabot this year. I was born in China and grew up in Cleveland, OH (Drew Carrey Show, LeBron James, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum). Outside of studying economics here at the College and statistics at GSAS, my undergraduate time was spent joining two dozen clubs as a freshman and then whittling that down to two by senior year. After graduating from Cabot House in 2005, I spent time in strategy consulting/hedgefund work near D.C. and business initiation in China. In addition to law-related topics, Im happy to talk about recruiting, entrepreneurship, working aboard, as well as cooking and gardening, so see you in the dining hall!

Chloe Kolman

Chloe grew up outside of Chicago (northern suburbs) and graduated from Yale in 2007 with a BA in Anthropology. Before applying to law school, she worked for a year in energy and global warming policy at a Chicago non-profit and she intends to pursue environmental law after graduation. This summer she clerked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Regional Counsel in Seattle, and this fall she will be clerking with the Environment & Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in Newton, MA. She is an article editor for the Harvard Environmental Law Review, a member of the HLS Board of Student Advisors, and a proud member of the Cabot House advising team. She also loves to bake, hike and cheer on the Chicago Bears!

Adam Shinar

I am an SJD student at HLS, after having completed my LL.M there in '07. Originally from Israel, I grew up in both Israel and the U.S. I hold a LL.B from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where I also studied philosophy. After graduating, I clerked for the Chief Justice of the Israeli Supreme Court and then taught jurisprudence at Hebrew University while also working as a civil rights attorney in an Israeli NGO. For the past year I've been a teaching fellow at the College, teaching "Justice" and bioethics. Most of my research has to do with constitutional law and theory and political philosophy. But I also do other things! I love jazz, politics, law (obviously), and I occasionally play the piano (when there's one around). I also love cooking (especially baking bread) and worked for a while as a sous-chef at a French restaurant in Jerusalem. I look forward to meeting you!

Mayra Suarez

Hi! I'm Mayra and I'm really excited to be joining Cabot this year as a non-resident pre-law tutor. I'm currently pursuing a JD/MPP at Harvard, which is a joint degree between the Law School, where I just finished my 1L year, and the Kennedy School, where I'm currently on my first year.  I'll graduate from both schools in 2012.

I was born and raised in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and left home to attend Harvard College, where I studied Government. After graduating in 2006, with the realization that I was in no way certain that I wanted to pursue a career in the law, I decided to work as a legal assistant at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, and Flom, LLP in Washington, DC. My exposure to incredibly interesting cases prompted me to apply to law school, after which I'll hopefully be working on white collar criminal cases. Whether you want to brush up on your Spanish skills, want to learn more about somewhere to go during spring break (Puerto Rico should definitely be at the top of your list!), want to hear more about the joint degree option, or anything else, I'm always available. I look forward to meeting you!
