Jill Constantino,
Allston
Burr Resident Dean
Hi! My name is Jill Constantino and I'm your Allston Burr Resident Dean. Please
come visit me in my office on the second floor of A entry to introduce yourself, to
chat, to seek guidance on academic matters, to think through social dilemmas, to
consider personal struggles, and to celebrate the great moments in your life. I'm
just thrilled about my new role in Cabot this year!
We might have met last year when I was Cabot's non-resident writing tutor and I
taught in the Expository Writing Program. Now, I'll be teaching in the anthropology
program. My research centers on the Galápagos Islands where I study conflicts
between scientists and fishermen. I am interested in the strange relationship
between history and evolution in this place commonly thought of us unpeopled. (In
fact, more than 20 thousand people live in the archipelago!) Through my graduate
work in cultural anthropology, my undergraduate studies in biology, my fascination
with the history of science, and my time teaching writing, I hope to relate to your
work in many ways and be inspired by your knowledge.
Given that writing, thinking, and living are all inextricably linked, you may note how
the different parts of my life enter your residential and academic worlds. Rio is five
years old and Solomon is four. They roam the halls, marvel at your musical abilities
in the practice rooms, admire your collegiate finesse, and argue for their right to ice
cream in the dining hall. Michael, my husband, teaches in Expos and runs a diversity
consulting business; he is an anthropologist who studies how kids learn about race.
Right now, he is working on some interesting iPhone apps, is anxiously waiting to
see how Disney handles the new African American princess Tiana, and is looking for
tennis partners. I love to travel, eat, read, and run; I am always happy for early
morning company on the river running paths...as long as you're not too fast!
My family and I are so excited to get to know you. Here's to a great 2009-2010!
