Interested in Joining a Mentor Program?

Harvard China Care has been talking for awhile now about creating a mentorship program for older adopted children (9yr+) who cannot make our Dumplings playgroup because of the age cap. We are currently recruiting students who will commit to being a mentor for at least a semester... but we would like to know how large or small this program will be. So, if you are interested in joining, please email Jessica (pang@fas.harvard.edu) with your child's NAME and AGE. If you know other families who would like to be a part of this program as well, let them know! Check back at this site for updates on the progress of the mentorship program.

Dumplings Update: 2/20/2005

Beginning with a traditional Chinese Dragon game, Dumplings on February 19 was once again a success with more than a dozen families attending. The theme of this Dumplings is Chinese Markets and stories were told about shopping at some of the largest markets in China including markets in Guangzhou, Yunnan and Kashgar. After looking at Chinese and Hong Kong currency, the kids made their own versions of Chinese currency and later made their own versions of a stencil craft that could often be found in China's markets. The kids went home learning a little bit more about shopping in China and a little bit wealthier with their Chinese yuans.

Brighten a Child's Life: Join Harvard China Care

Harvard China Care General Meeting!
Thursday, February 17, 8pm
Leverett JCR

There are thousands of children living in orphanages across China.

Many of them have never gone to school, walked outside, seen a movie--things that we take for granted. Some of them are in dire need of surgeries or therapy.

Some of them just need love.

Come join Harvard China Care at our first introductory meeting of the semester. Discover all the ways in which you can help a child in China have a better life, from fundraising to volunteering in China to playing
with and mentoring adopted children. If you love making kids smile, love China, or love both, this is the organization for you!

We welcome everyone: there's no comp or application, and you don't need to know anything about China. Just bring your great ideas, enthusiasm, and care! We'll provide refreshments.

Hope to see you there!

Fundraising News: Boston Marathon and More!

If you are an athlete or just like to run, help the club raise money by running in the Boston Marathon (April 18, 2005)! We have six t-shirts to run in the marathon, and we are looking for 4 more runners. If you know someone who would be interested, please send their information to either Aidan at madigan@fas.harvard.edu or Gary at gcooney@fas.harvard.edu. Both Aidan and Gary will be running in the marathon as well! The entire amount of money raised will go toward our projects in China.

Harvard China Care recently received a large donation which will further its goal in renovating the orphanage in Saiqi. Learn more about our Saiqi project here.

Dumplings Celebrates Chinese New Year

After cutting up 20 red envelope templates, 40 firecracker squares, 80 dragon body strips at the planning meeting on Thursday, the Dumplings celebration of Chinese New Year this Saturday (Feb. 5, 2005) was a great success. Beginning with a zodiac game, parents, kids and the volunteers all had a fun imitating their respective zodiac signs. There was a lot of “cock-a-doodling” since 2005 is the year of the rooster! Dumplings then split into different groups and rotated between three stations to make (non-explosive) firecrackers, dragons, and red envelopes. Storytelling featured “Nian,” a traditional tale about why children love to play with firecrackers for New Year. Dumplings concluded with the kids enjoying Chinese treats, such as rice crackers and egg rolls, playing with their accordion dragons, and showing off colorful firecrackers. They especially enjoyed practicing saying “Happy New Year” to get a piece of candy for their newly created red envelopes. At the end of 2 hours, the girls learned a little more about Chinese New Year and brought home dragons, firecrackers and red envelopes to mark another new year.
