Celebrate the One-Year Anniversary of the
HCC Children's Home in Baoji!
This November, we mark the one-year anniversary of the Harvard China Care Children’s Home in Baoji, Shanxi Province, established in partnership with the Jenzabar Foundation.
A little over one year ago, this home opened its doors to the sickest and weakest infants from surrounding institutions. Since its launch last November, it has provided medical care to over forty infants, been home to six HCC volunteers, and seen six children adopted into loving homes around the world. These children are playful, energetic, funny, quiet, loud, curious—but most of all, they, like your children and hopefully mine someday, each have the chance to live a healthy life and pursue dreams of their own. Thanks to the staff in our home who provide personalized and professional care, and the generosity of your support, these children can go on to live as though they are not orphans at all but rather, simply children.

Author Xinran Xue Visits with Harvard China Care

World-acclaimed author Xinran Xue came to speak with Harvard China Care members on October 18, while in Boston promoting Motherbridge of Love, a poem-turned book submitted by an anonymous adoptive mother. Xinran, a columnist for the Guardian Newspaper was born in Beijing and is also the author of The Good Women of China and Sky Burial. In 2004, she founded a charity called The Mothers’ Bridge of Love (MBL), a London-based organization dedicated to reaching to Chinese children living all over the world, including those adopted by Western families and those still living in China.

Orphaned from AID(S): A benefit dinner and silent auction

Dec. 14, 2005 * 6-8pm * Ticknor Lounge, Boylston Hall
Orphaned from AID(S) is a benefit dinner and silent auction seeking to raise awareness of key health care issues that China faces as it enters the twenty-first century. At the same time, we also aim to raise money for the surgeries of three children, for whom this dinner and auction represent a life-saving opportunity.
Dr. Arthur Kleinman of Harvard University and
Dr. Jing Jun of Qinghua University will speak at the dinner. In addition, we will feature silent auction items such as
JetBlue tickets, a dinner for two at
Henrietta's Table and a 1-night stay at the
Charles Hotel, and more!
Please
RSVP with
Aidan Madigan-Curtis. We hope to see you there!

Interested in Joining a Mentor Program?
Harvard China Care has been talking for awhile now about creating a mentorship program for older adopted children (9yr+) who cannot make our Dumplings playgroup because of the age cap. We are currently recruiting students who will commit to being a mentor for at least a semester... but we would like to know how large or small this program will be. So, if you are interested in joining, please email Jessica (pang@fas.harvard.edu) with your child's NAME and AGE. If you know other families who would like to be a part of this program as well, let them know! Check back at this site for updates on the progress of the mentorship program.

Dumplings Update: 2/20/2005
Beginning with a traditional Chinese Dragon game, Dumplings on February 19 was once again a success with more than a dozen families attending. The theme of this Dumplings is Chinese Markets and stories were told about shopping at some of the largest markets in China including markets in Guangzhou, Yunnan and Kashgar. After looking at Chinese and Hong Kong currency, the kids made their own versions of Chinese currency and later made their own versions of a stencil craft that could often be found in China's markets. The kids went home learning a little bit more about shopping in China and a little bit wealthier with their Chinese yuans.

Brighten a Child's Life: Join Harvard China Care
Harvard China Care General Meeting!
Thursday, February 17, 8pm
Leverett JCR
There are thousands of children living in orphanages across China.
Many of them have never gone to school, walked outside, seen a movie--things that we take for granted. Some of them are in dire need of surgeries or therapy.
Some of them just need love.
Come join Harvard China Care at our first introductory meeting of the semester. Discover all the ways in which you can help a child in China have a better life, from fundraising to volunteering in China to playing
with and mentoring adopted children. If you love making kids smile, love China, or love both, this is the organization for you!
We welcome everyone: there's no comp or application, and you don't need to know anything about China. Just bring your great ideas, enthusiasm, and care! We'll provide refreshments.
Hope to see you there!

Dumplings Celebrates Chinese New Year
After cutting up 20 red envelope templates, 40 firecracker squares, 80 dragon body strips at the planning meeting on Thursday, the Dumplings celebration of Chinese New Year this Saturday (Feb. 5, 2005) was a great success. Beginning with a zodiac game, parents, kids and the volunteers all had a fun imitating their respective zodiac signs. There was a lot of “cock-a-doodling” since 2005 is the year of the rooster! Dumplings then split into different groups and rotated between three stations to make (non-explosive) firecrackers, dragons, and red envelopes. Storytelling featured “Nian,” a traditional tale about why children love to play with firecrackers for New Year. Dumplings concluded with the kids enjoying Chinese treats, such as rice crackers and egg rolls, playing with their accordion dragons, and showing off colorful firecrackers. They especially enjoyed practicing saying “Happy New Year” to get a piece of candy for their newly created red envelopes. At the end of 2 hours, the girls learned a little more about Chinese New Year and brought home dragons, firecrackers and red envelopes to mark another new year.

Helping a Heart on Halloween
On Halloween, a group of volunteers went "trick or treating" around Cambridge to raise money for Guo Yanfei, a seven-year-old girl with a heart condition in need of immediate medical care. Together, we raised over $1500—just enough to cover the cost of the surgery when combined with a grant from the China Care Foundation.
Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers and the generosity of our donors, we may have been able to help save a little girl's life!
To find out more about Guo Yanfei, who lives in the Saiqi Orphanage, click
here. This will be updated as we receive more news about Yanfei's condition.
