Art of Survival Press Release

PRESS RELEASE
FEBRUARY 5, 2004

ART OF SURVIVAL: DEALING WITH SEXUAL VIOLENCE features the work of eleven different artists, both professional and student. The work ranges in form from visual to performance pieces, and includes photography, sculpture, painting, video, interactive, and text-based work. All of the work contains strong emotional content, both angry and uplifting, and explores the issue of sexual violence from diverse viewpoints. The show is curated by Ariel Westerman and Anna Ludwig.

ART OF SURVIVAL is sponsored by the Harvard student group Coalition Against Sexual Violence to both raise awareness about sexual assault and to raise money to benefit the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. Governor Mitt Romney has decreased the state funding for rape crisis centers by 75%, a decision which makes it harder for these vital centers to provide services like hotlines, medical advocacy, counseling and education.

The show will be on display in the Adams Artspace, 12 Linden Street, in Harvard Square the week of February 12-15 2004. Opening Receptions will be held Thursday, February 12th from 6:00 -9:00 p.m., and on Friday February 13th from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Performances by Spoken Word Society, a cast member from the Vagina Monologues and poet Raquel Evita Seidel begin at 7:00 p.m. on both evenings. The gallery will be open for viewing hours on Saturday February 14th from 3-6 p.m., and Sunday February 15th from 3-6 p.m. Food and beverages will be provided. The show will include a table featuring information on activist opportunities and resources, as well as a donation box, proceeds from which will go directly to the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. In addition, counselors from the Office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response will be available to assist anyone who is negatively affected by the strong emotional content of the show.
