Quincy Elementary School Tutoring
Info       Pictures

The Josiah Quincy Elementary School is located at the edge of Chinatown in Boston, and features a unique community, consisting of approximately 50% first language Chinese speaking individuals. The remainder come from socially and economically diverse African-American, Latino, and Caucasian households all over Boston.

The Quincy Elementary School Tutoring Program is designed to serve several purposes. Our volunteers can either serve as one-on-one tutors or opt to develop and implement their own programs.

As a one-on-one tutor, we provide extra help to elementary school students having common difficulties with subjects like math, science, English, and reading. We aim to help foreign or recently immigrated students assimilate to the Chinatown community.

We also supplement the school curriculum with enrichment activities of the tutor's volition, ranging from a study of Leonardo da Vinci and parachutes to understanding the Tyndall effect to constructing an original school newspaper to learning Latin. In this capacity, the tutors are able to explore areas of their own interest, thereby allowing the creativity of the tutor and tutee to flourish. By serving as positive role models in both these tutoring scenarios, tutors help to build confidence in their tutees and form meaningful, lasting relationships.

As students themselves, our volunteers have very full schedules, and the Quincy program offers the unique feature of adapting itself to the tutor's own schedule. A typical tutoring session lasts for about one hour per week anytime between 9am and 2:30pm, allowing a great deal of personal attention to be given to the student(s).

Neither tutoring experience nor knowledge of spoken or written Chinese is a prerequisite for joining our organization. All that is required is a creative mind and enthusiasm for teaching!!
