Harvard Classical Club's Frogs a Resounding Success
Club's production meets high expectations

April 2, 2003
After many months of preparation, the Harvard Classical Club staged its original translation of Aristophanes' Frogs to both critical and box-office success this past March.

The play, which was directed by Chris Kukstis '05 and produced by David Camden '05, follows the adventures of the god Dionysus as he makes his way down to the underworld in search of a real poet.

As always, this year's production rested on the shoulders of numerous club members, who helped in translating, acting, teching, and publicizing the Frogs. Without a doubt, this sort of production would not have been possible without the cooperation of all these people.

Since the production, the club has also come out with a DVD recording of both the Menaechmi and Frogs to help preserve the memory of these performances. If you would like to purchase a copy of either play, they are available for $10 each while supplies last. Email David Camden at camden@fas if you are interested.

Classical Club Sees Troy

May 19, 2004
On Saturday, May 15, the Classical Club descended on Loew's Boston Common to view Wolfgang Peterson's epic reinterpretation of the Trojan cycle during its first weekend of release. While many club members bemoaned the poor dialogue and the liberal changes made to the original myth, they were all united in their heckling and passed a truly enjoyable evening together during the club's last activity of the school year.

Club members enjoy a healthy evening of heckling.

Boston Schools Take Top Awards at Harvard Certamen

March 3, 2004
On Saturday, February 28, the Classical Club hosted the first ever Harvard Certamen.

Twenty-three teams from Massachusetts and Rhode Island participated in the competition, which tested high-school students' knowledge of Roman history, mythology, and the Latin language. All the questions, which were aimed at helping MassJCL students prepare for the state and national tournaments, were written by Harvard undergraduates, many of whom were themselves Certamen veterans.

In the Novice level, Boston Latin School took first place, Roxbury Latin second, and Andover West Middle School third. In the Lower level, Boston Latin Academy placed first, Boston Latin School second, and Pierce Middle School third. And in the Upper level, Boston Latin School walked away with first, Boston Latin Academy second, and Franklin High School took third. Congratulations to everyone who competed.
