CODA has a long-established volunteer program with the Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Allston,
Massachusetts. Our
volunteer program seeks to foster positive and lasting relationships between Harvard students and deaf youth in the greater Boston area. Harvard students volunteer at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Boston in a variety of different capacities, ranging from academic tutoring to outdoor activities. The mentoring schedule and time commitment is very flexible; students are able to design a schedule that fits their own needs. Most students volunteer for approximately one hour every week.
Fluency in sign language is by no means a requirement to join the program. However, we do ask that our mentors have a basic knowledge of ASL. Don't know any ASL? Fear not! CODA offers its very own ASL classes. The vast majority of our mentors are former and current students of CODA's ASL classes. Before participating in our program, we ask that interested volunteers fill out the "CODA Mentoring Program Questionnaire," and return it to one of the Volunteer Liaisons (see link below). All volunteers are required to undergo a CORI check before participating in the mentoring program. The CORI form is available at the Phillips Brook House, and can be filled out during normal office hours. Remember to bring a Government Issued ID! Note: if you have previously filled out the CORI form during your time at Harvard, you do not need to fill out another one.
