I heard about the Feast of the Guardian Angels this week; what are guardian angels and why do we celebrate them? To understand guardian angels, we must first understand angels in general. The Catechism tells us that angels are purely spiritual creatures that “have intelligence and will: they are personal and immortal creatures.” (CCC 330) The Catechism also tells us that the word ‘angel’ refers to their office as God’s messengers. They have announced His deeds and done His will throughout the entire history of salvation. It was the angel Gabriel who announced the birth of Christ to the world! The angels continue this ministry to this day, and the Church constantly benefits from their guidance and assistance. We even join our praise during the Mass to their eternal praise of God in Heaven. Now to discuss guardian angels in particular, the Catechism says, “From its very beginning until death human life is surrounded by their (the angels) watchful care and intercession. ‘Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.’ Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.” (CCC 336) So, unpacking this statement, we understand that every Christian (and likely every non-Christian as well) has a particular angel assigned to him throughout his life to intercede for him before God, to guide him through life, and to aid him in reaching eternal salvation in Heaven. Our guardian angels are one of the most powerful aids God has given us for our earthly journey toward eternity; they are with us constantly from birth until death , and the more often we turn to them for intercession and guidance, the more they can and will do for us. A reason to celebrate indeed! Contact the Webmaster Please send questions or comments about the website to Alex Duarte via email aduarte@fas.harvard.edu with the subject heading "CSA Website."
