Some games I've enjoyed

• Chess. Get xboard and play on FICS.
  Here's a site with lots of variants.
• Scrabble.
• Monopoly.
• Stratego. Which is actually a good deal of fun once you realize it's a fast bluffing game and not a deep strategy game. There's an xstratego for Unix; you want this version which has a few fixes relative to the original posted on X.org.
• Risk.
  xfrisk is a free networked implementation for Unix.
• Diplomacy. Have a look at the Variant Bank.
• (Advanced) Civ
• Wiz-War.
• Zar.
• Illuminati from Steve Jackson Games. Fnord.
• Terrace, which is a little limited but still fun, particularly the 4-way version.
• Iron Dragon -- here are some simple variant rules I found.
• Settlers of Catan. (Duh.)
• Blood Royale. This is fun, but it feels like it could be made a lot better. I've been revising the rules, but don't hold your breath.
• Age of Renaissance.
• Puerto Rico. (English publisher)
