The History of the Jacket
You've got the right guy. Here's what happened. I'm from Florida, and I
worked for a couple of summers as a lifeguard for the City of Boca Raton.
On a particularly cold day, I think in the fall of 1985, when I would have
been a senior, I gave the jacket to an underclassman at a tournament that
was being held at Dartmouth, so that he could keep warm. I can't quite
remember his name -- it might have been Don. I have a vague recollection
that he ended up going to medical school at Stanford. I think that I recall
this because in 1998 I ran into his roommate, who also had been on the
ultimate team, in Bangkok. I was traveling around Southeast Asia on a
fellowship, and this other guy had been doing some international development
work in Bangaladesh. I hope that this helps identify more precisely who the
first recipient was.
In any event, at the end of the season, the underclassman to whom I gave the
jacket, sought to return it. I told him to keep it, on the condition that
he pass it on to a deserving freshman the following year.
Incidentally, in the summer of 1994, while I was at an ultimate tournament
in Montreal over the July 4 weekend, I ran into the Harvard team and chatted
with the captain, whose name I can't recall. He told me that the jacket had
become a tradition, passed down to each rookie of the year. That is the
first and last that I had heard about the jacket until your email.
I think that it is great that the jacket is still alive, although it must be
particularly ratty because when I gave it away I remember that the Marine
Patrol lettering had started peeling off.
Let me know if you need any more information, and shoot me an email when you
get the website up and running.
Many thanks to David Lubitz et al. who have helped us track down the details of this story.
